Firm Loudeye for $60 Million
Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced on Tuesday that it has
acquired Loudeye, a provider of branded digital music stores, for
$60 million. Under the terms, Loudeye shareholders will receive
$4.50 per share in cash for each share of Loudeye stock they own.
Founded in 1997, Seattle-based Loudeye operates 60 digital music
stores in more than 20 countries for partners including Coca-Cola,
MSN, MTV and Tiscali. The company reported 2005 revenues of $20.3
million. Nokia said it sold more than 15 million music-enabled
devices during the second quarter. "People should be able to access
all the music they want, anywhere, anytime and at a reasonable cost.
With this acquisition, we aim to deliver that vision and a
comprehensive music experience to Nokia device owners during 2007,"
said Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice president and general manager of
multimedia at Nokia. The transaction is expected to close in the
fourth quarter of 2006.

External HD DVD Drive for Xbox 360 Console
Los Angeles - Microsoft on Tuesday for the first time
displayed the external HD DVD drive it developed for the Xbox 360
video game console, CNET News.com reported. The drive is about the
size of a hardcover book, and will be among the least expensive HD
DVD players, Microsoft senior program manager Kevin Collins told
News.com. Microsoft's external HD DVD drive is expected to ship in
the fall. Sony plans to include its own next-generation DVD
technology, a Blu-ray Disc player, inside the PlayStation 3 game
console.

Offers Bob Dylan Tour Pre-Sale With Album; 800-Track Box Set
Cupertino, Calif. - Apple announced on Tuesday that it has
partnered with Columbia Records to offer an exclusive pre-order on
iTunes for Bob Dylan's upcoming "Modern Times" album that gives
purchasers access to pre-sale concert tickets. The $13.99 digital
album is available today from the digital music store. Apple also
said it has created a Bob Dylan digital box set, "The Collection,"
which includes all of his albums and encompasses nearly 800 tracks
spanning his entire career. The $199 digital box set will go on sale
from iTunes on Aug. 29.

San Diego - Sony Electronics on Tuesday introduced the
Mylo ("my life online"), a portable device that features Wi-Fi
connectivity and offers access to a range of instant messaging
services. The device features a 2.4-inch color LCD screen, a
slide-out QWERTY thumb keyboard and comes embedded with Google Talk,
Skype and Yahoo Messenger. The Mylo also features an HTML browser
for surfing full Web pages and accessing Web-based e-mail, and 1GB
of flash memory for storing music or video files. The $350 Mylo
personal communicator will ship to retailers in September.

Probes Game Publisher THQ Over Stock Option Grants
Agoura Hills, Calif. - Video game publisher THQ announced
that it has received an informal inquiry from the SEC, requesting
documents relating to its stock option grant practices. The SEC has
of late launched more than 80 investigations into "backdating,"
where a company changes the date on which employee stock options
were granted in order to increase their value. THQ said it had
already begun an internal review of its options grants before it
received notice of the SEC inquiry. The SEC is also investigating
rival game publishers Activision and Take-Two interactive over stock
option grants.

Burbank, Calif. - Warner Bros. Online announced on Tuesday
that later this month it will launch new online channels for its
Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and Scooby-Doo properties. The new
Hanna-Barbera site will feature "Saturday Morning Forever," a
broadband video channel that will offer two hours of new and classic
cartoons per week, including episodes of "The Flintstones," "The
Jetsons," "Yogi Bear," "Huckleberry Hound" and "Space Ghost." An
updated LooneyTunes.com will offer 6-8 on-demand cartoons each
month, arranged around a specific theme like "Back to School." The
re-vamped Scooby-Doo site will feature original downloadable
podcasts of spooky campfire tales, in addition to a range of new
online games.

Airways to Provide In-Flight Text-Message Information Service
London - Virgin Atlantic Airways has announced plans to
introduce an in-flight text message service, which will allow
passengers to post questions on seat-back screens and receive
answers from a land-based answer service, Reuters reported. "It's a
great way to ask for a recommended bar in New York, what's the best
way to get over jet-lag, or what's the best way to chat up the cabin
crew," a Virgin spokeswoman told Reuters. Another U.K. carrier,
discount airline Ryanair, plans to introduce an in-flight gambling
service in the second quarter. Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has said
that such a service could potentially create enough revenue to
enable the airline to do away with air fares.

the investment bank Morgan Stanley. Atlanta-based Nexidia's

places, industry terms and jargon. The company focuses on customers
in the government intelligence, contact center management, media
content production and the legal industries. Other investors in the

Aug. 8 "Pokemon Day," as gamers gathered in the city's Bryant Park
to compete in the Pokemon Video Game National Championships. Part of
the Pokemon Party of the Decade, organized to commemorate Pokemon's
10th anniversary, the game competition will feature a celebrity
appearance from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan. Originally introduced in
1996 in Japan as a trading card game, the Pokemon franchise has
since accumulated $25 billion in worldwide retail sales, including
26 video game titles that have sold more than 140 million units

line of S2 Sports Walkman digital music players. About the size of a
tube of lipstick, the flash-based players are water resistant and
made of aluminum. They feature step, distance and calorie counters,
along with Sony's G-Sensor and Music Pacer technology, which can
automatically switch to the appropriate walking or running playlist
to match one's stride. A "Shuffle Shake" feature lets users switch
to shuffle mode by shaking the player three times within two

Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio
service to more than 7 million subscribers, said on Tuesday that it
will launch a new 24-hour sports news and talk channel on Aug. 28.

teen recording artists Aly & AJ have recorded a "Simlish"-language
version of their song "Chemicals React" that will be included in
versions of EA's "The Sims 2 Pets." A music video for the song sung
in the game's made-up language, set in the world of "The Sims 2,"
will also be included on a bonus DVD in a deluxe edition of Aly &
AJ's album "Into the Rush." "The Sims 2 Pets" is slated for release
for console and PC platforms on Oct. 17, with a PSP version to ship
in November. Separately, EA announced that it plans to ship the
latest installment of its "NBA Street" franchise in the spring of

IMedia Adding Multimedia CD-ROMs to Sunday Newspapers
Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday reported on
IMedia, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based firm that has partnered with a
number of major newspapers to distribute CD-ROM discs filled with
movie trailers, music, video games, celebrity interviews and other
content inside Sunday editions. So far, the Dallas Morning News and
the New York Daily News have signed on to distribute the discs,
which IMedia CEO David MacEachern told the Times could eventually
yield additional ad revenue of $2 per disc. The company said that as
many as 700 video and banner ads could be sold on each edition of
the CD.
