o Sonicblue Fires CEO Potashner; Company Defends Executive Loans

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Consumer electronics firm Sonicblue announced late
Thursday that its board of directors has fired chairman, president and CEO
Ken Potashner. The company gave no explanation for the dismissal, naming
executive vice president for marketing and product management L. Gregory
Ballard as interim CEO. Ousted CEO Potashner told The Wall Street Journal
he believes he was terminated over a dispute with the company's board,
concerning loans made by the company to board members totaling $600,000.
Potashner alleged that after receiving the loans, the board then changed
the terms so they didn't need to be repaid. In a press conference on
Friday, interim CEO Ballard defended the loans, saying they were
legitimate and properly reported in SEC filings. He also denied that any
dispute over the loans, or concern over the company's financial situation,
were the reason for Potashner's termination. Before joining Sonicblue in
April, Ballard was CEO of 3dfx.

o Dutch Soccer Clubs Sue Sony for Use of Trademarks In Video Game

London -- Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the company's European video
game unit, will face charges in court next week that it used trademarks
from several European soccer teams without permission in its "This is
Football 2002" game. Netherlands-based football clubs Ajax, Feyenoord and
PSV are asking a Dutch court to suspend sales of the game in the
Netherlands, as well as prohibit the release of the upcoming 2003 version
of the game. Sven Klos, an attorney for the clubs, told Reuters that the
clubs already have licensing agreements with Sony rival Electronic Arts to
use their trademarks in video games.

o MPEG LA Sues DVD Player Maker Apex Digital Over Unpaid Royalties

Denver, Colo. -- MPEG LA, a licensing body consisting of patent holders of
video compression technology, announced that it has sued DVD player
manufacturer Apex Digital for allegedly breaching its contract and failing
to pay millions of dollars in royalties. The lawsuit, filed in U.S.
District Court in Colorado, seeks an injunction against Ontario,
Calif.-based Apex Digital from using MPEG-2 patents in its products until
the company pays all royalties that it owes. "Apex's disregard for its
contractual obligations is unfair to MPEG LA's other licensees, accounting
for most of the DVD player sales in today's world market, who are meeting
their licensing obligations and paying their rightful share of reasonable
royalties," said MPEG LA chief executive Baryn S. Futa.

o Sony Intros New Digital Rights Management Technology

Tokyo -- Sony Corp. has introduced new digital rights management
technology designed to protect music and movie content downloaded from the
Internet to PCs and other devices like game consoles and mobile devices.
The new "OpenMG X" technology consists of three software modules: an
encoding module that adds digital rights management information, such as
the number of times content was copied or played, to music/movie content
and converts them into code at the distributors' end; a server module that
distributes digital rights management information on content to the users'
end; and a client module for developing software compatible with OpenMG X.
Sony also announced the creation of "Magiqlip," a network music player for
PC that's compatible with OpenMG X. Sony said that its Pressplay music
subscription service joint venture with Universal Music is considering
adopting OpenMG X, and that Japanese firm Label Gate will soon launch a
music distribution service compatible with Magiqlip.

(San Francisco) Online magazine Salon.com recently featured an article
exploring current discussion in the community of developers working on
software related to the Gnutella file-sharing protocol, which could
potentially limit the number of programs that can access the network. Many
users of popular programs like BearShare, LimeWire have experienced
denial-of-service type attacks when using the file-sharing programs, due
to rapid-fire queries on their PCs from users of other, less-considerate
