o Viacom's MTV Acquires Atom
Entertainment for $200 Million
New York - Viacom's MTV Networks announced on Wednesday
that it has acquired San Francisco-based Atom Entertainment, a
provider of short films and online games, for $200 million. Atom's
holdings include online film pioneer AtomFilms.com, online games
site Shockwave.com, AddictingGames.com and AddictingClips.com. "This
acquisition is right on the money with our digital strategy," said
Viacom CEO Tom Freston. "It adds great scale with users, improves
our growing casual gaming position, and brings a world-class digital
video library and a fantastic management team." MTV has worked to
expand its online media library with its recent acquisitions of
Xfire, Y2M, GameTrailers.com, IFilm and Neopets. The company said
that with the addition of Atom, its combined sites will count more
than 50 million casual gamers playing more than 400 million games a
month. The acquisition of Atom Entertainment is expected to close in
the third quarter of 2006.

o Japanese Electronics
Giants Partner to Develop Internet TVs
Tokyo - A group of Japanese consumer electronics firms
that includes Matsushita, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba and Hitachi have
announced plans to develop a joint standard for Internet-based
televisions, the Associated Press reported. The Linux-based
televisions will reportedly make it easier to access online video
and other digital video without the need of a keyboard. Sony and
Matsushita will hold the largest stakes in the TV Portal Service
Corp. joint venture, which Japan's Nihon Keizai newspaper reported
expects to begin selling the new devices as early as next year. The
venture aims to sell between 10 and 20 million Internet televisions
by 2011, when Japan is slated to officially switch to digital
broadcasting.

o Univ. of
California to Digitize Libraries Via Google Book Search
Mountain View, Calif. - Google announced on Wednesday that
the University of California has joined its Google Book Search
project, which will digitize books from libraries at UC and fellow
partners including the University of Michigan, the New York Public
Library, and Stanford, Harvard and Oxford universities. "The
digitization project furthers UC's mission," said UC president
Robert C. Dynes. "It greatly expands our ability to give scholars
and the public access to the kinds of information and ideas that
drive scholarly innovation and public knowledge and discourse."
Google Book Search will provide free browsing and online reading of
public domain books held by partner libraries, while for copyrighted
works users will get information such as title and author's name,
along with a short sample of text and information on where to borrow
or purchase the book. Publishers and authors can also opt out of
including their works in the search index. However, some authors
believe that they should instead be contacted for permission before
their works are included, and groups including the Association of
American Publishers and Authors Guild have sued Google for copyright
infringement over the digitization project.

o Financial
Times: Viacom Pondering Bid for Social Networking Site Bebo
London - Media conglomerate Viacom is looking into buying
social networking service Bebo.com, according to a report in the
Financial Times. Viacom lost out in its bidding for MySpace to rival
News Corporation, which paid $580 million for the social network.
San Francisco-based Bebo.com currently claims 25 million users
(compared with 90 million for MySpace), and is the top social
network in Ireland and second most-popular in the U.K. The Financial
Times reported that Viacom has instructed its mergers and
acquisitions team to look into Bebo, while Bebo CEO Michael Birch
told the FT the company is still growing rapidly, and is in no hurry
to sell. Birch added that Bebo is approached at least once every two
weeks by potential bidders, many of them traditional media firms
like Viacom -- which owns Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelodeon,
Comedy Central and other cable networks.

o Actors'
Unions Extend Commercials Pact; Will Study New Media Compensation
Los Angeles - The Hollywood actors' unions announced that
they have agreed on a two-year extension of contracts that determine
how they are paid for commercials, including those appearing on the
Internet and other digital media. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and
American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the
advertising industry's ANA/AAAA Joint Policy Committee on Broadcast
Talent Union Relations (JPC) announced their agreement on Friday,
which must still be approved by members of all parties. The groups
also agreed to conduct a joint study to examine alternative methods
to compensate performers for commercials airing on new forms of
media, with results to be considered in the next collective
bargaining process. "Because of the tremendous growth of the
Internet and digital technology, the unions have agreed to a
two-year extension to conduct a comprehensive joint study that will
allow us to determine whether existing pay structures should remain
the same or be modified," said SAG chief negotiator John McGuire.

o N.Y. Times:
Chinese Youth Posting Subtitled U.S. TV Shows Online
Shanghai - The New York Times recently reported on enterprising
Chinese fans of American television, who download shows off Internet
services like BitTorrent, add Chinese subtitles, and re-post them
online, avoiding both Chinese censors and U.S. copyright
authorities. "We've set a goal of producing 40 TV shows a week,
which basically means all of the shows produced by Fox, ABC, CBS and
NBC," Ding Chentai, a 23-year-old involved with one translation
project, told The Times. Those involved said their motivations
included both a love of American pop culture and the poor quality of
Chinese TV. "Our own actors are not bad. Those responsible for
making Chinese TV shows pathetic are the directors, screenwriters,
editors and the people doing the lighting, music, special effects
and makeup. There are bits of poor quality in every aspect, and it
adds up to total trash," one Chinese fan of U.S. TV told The Times.
