o Online Advertising Market to Reach $18.9 Billion by 2010

New York -- The online advertising market will continue its steady growth over the next five years, by 2010 reaching $18.9 billion -- more than double its current level -- according to a new forecast from JupiterResearch. Search engine advertising is expected to generate more revenue than standard display advertising by 2010, with classified advertising growing by nearly 10%. At the same time, advertisers will also take advantage of the growing number of broadband-connected households to deliver rich and streaming media advertisements: JupiterResearch predicts that rich media spending will grow at a 25% compound annual growth rate and streaming media at a 30% rate over the next five years.

o CEO Of Cisco Calls Acquisition of Nokia "Extremely Unlikely"

San Jose, Calif. -- John Chambers, the CEO of Cisco Systems, downplayed a possible acquisition of Nokia by Cisco, calling such an action "extremely unlikely" and labelling the recent press speculation as "rumours." On Sunday, The Business newspaper in Britain reported that Cisco Systems, the large networking company, was considering an acquisition of Finnish wireless technology company Nokia. However, during interviews on Wednesday, Chambers discounted any possible acquisition, saying Cisco generally acquires small companies with a niche technology. "If I was betting on it, I'd bet against it," Chambers told CNBC.

o Japanese Sony Artists Seek iTunes Listings Despite Licensing Issues

Tokyo -- Despite the lack of deal between Sony Music's Japanese division to license songs for Apple's recently launched iTunes Store in Japan, a number of Sony's Japanese artists are seeking to place their music for sale on iTunes, the Associated Press reported. While Sony recording artist Motoharu Sano has already made some of his songs available on iTunes Japan, Amuse Inc., a large Japanese music management firm with a number of Sony acts, says it is also interested in placing its artists' songs on iTunes against labels' wishes. Apple said that it sold over one million songs in the Japanese iTunes Store's first week of operation.

o Defense Claims Convicted Murderer Inspired by "Grand Theft Auto"

Fayette, Alabama -- A twenty-year-old Georgia man who shot and killed three police officers after being arrested for stealing a car -- whose actions were partly blamed on the video game "Grand Theft Auto" -- was convicted of murder on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. Defense attorney Jim Standridge said that after his arrest, Devin Moore told police, "Life is a video game; everybody has to die sometime." While the judge in Moore's criminal case disallowed testimony linking the video game to the killings, civil suits against "Grand Theft Auto" manufacturer Take-Two Interactive and two retail stores are still pending.

o Peer-to-Peer Video Distributor Veoh Raises Funds

La Jolla, Calif. -- Veoh Networks, a developer of peer-to-peer TV delivery technology, announced on Wednesday that it has raised an undisclosed amount in its first round of venture capital financing, led by Shelter Capital Partners. Once Veoh's software is installed on users' PCs, they may then send and receive TV-quality, full-screen video over a secure peer-to-peer network. La Jolla, Calif.-based Veoh was founded in 2004 by Dmitry Shapiro, who developed peer-to-peer security software that is now used to regulate applications including BitTorrent and Grokster. "Today, thousands of video producers are creating innovative, entertaining, informative and provocative television content that is never slotted for broadcast over traditional television networks," said Shapiro. "Veoh provides an open system that allows producers to distribute their content directly to consumers, bypassing the traditional hurdles of getting 'picked up' by a major television network." A beta version of Veoh's software will be available later this month.
