o Microsoft Beats Apple to Punch,
Wins Patent on MP3 Player Playlists
Washington -- Microsoft has won a patent for software that
manages playlists on MP3 players, having beaten out Apple's
submission for a patent on essentially similar technology by five
months. Apple intends to appeal the rejection of its patent
application, in the hopes that it is not eventually forced to pay
Microsoft a license fee for the technology, which is utilized on its
iPod. "Apple invented and publicly released the iPod interface
before the Microsoft patent application cited by the examiner was
filed," said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. A spokesperson for
the patent office told News.com the appeal process can take up to 18
months; Apple can also take the matter up in federal court.

o Google
Suspends Project to Digitize Copyrighted Library Books
Mountain View, Calif. -- Reacting to criticism from the
publishing industry, Google has suspended its program to convert
millions of books from the Harvard, Michigan and Stanford university
libraries into digital format, the Associated Press reported on
Friday. The company is now asking publishers to tell it which
copyrighted books they don't want included in the program. The
Association of American Publishers has expressed serious concerns
about the Google Print Library Project, fearing the unauthorized
duplication of books and Google's apparent unwillingness to pay
royalties to publishers. "Google's announcement does nothing to
relieve the publishing industry's concerns," said Patricia
Schroeder, the AAP's president and CEO. Google's project also
includes books from the
New York Public Library and Oxford University, although those two
libraries are only providing the company with works no longer
protected by copyright.

o Carl Icahn
Expected to Unveil Plans for Improving Time Warner
Dulles, Va. -- Billionaire financier Carl Icahn was expected as
early as Friday to unveil his plans for improving the performance of
media giant Time Warner, with a portion of his strategy possibly
including the sale of the company's cable, publishing and America
Online units, The Los Angeles Times reported. Icahn, who owns less
than 1% of Time Warner, is reportedly teaming with several hedge
funds that together own more than 5% of the company. The Times
reported that Icahn is expected to recommend that the company expand
its stock buyback plan by $10 billion to $20 billion, as well as
dramatically reduce its expenses.

o Report:
Mobile Phone Virus Hits "Dozens" At Helsinki Championships
Helsinki, Finland -- Reuters reported on Friday that visitors to
the world athletics championships in Finland are catching viruses on
their mobile phones. The mobile virus is called Cabir and was first
reported last year. It uses the Bluetooth technology to infect
mobile phones. Reuters said certain mobile users at Helsinki's
Olympic Stadium have received the virus. "At most we are speaking
about dozens of infections, but during a short period and in one
spot this is a huge number," Jarmo Koski, a security official at
telecom firm TeliaSonera, told Reuters. Nokia and a handful of
technology firms teamed to offer live mobile TV broadcasts of the
events to users with compatible cell phones.
