o Report Shows Growth of U.S. Internet Penetration Slowing

Milpitas, Calif. -- The number of U.S citizens accessing the Internet from
their homes rose 16 percent last year, from 88.2 million last July to
102.1 million last month, according to recently published figures from
measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings. The figures represent a slowdown,
when compared with the 41 percent rise in home Internet access between
1999 and 2000. Currently, 58 percent of Americans have home Internet
access, up from 39 percent in 1999.

o Princeton Researcher to Present Controversial SDMI Findings

Washington, D.C. -- Princeton researcher Edward Felten will present his
findings that describe weaknesses in copyright protection technologies
developed by the recording industry on Wednesday, despite a threat from
the RIAA and technology developer Verance that doing so may result in
legal action. Felten's paper will be presented at the USENIX Security
Symposium in Washington; Felten and USENIX in June filed suit asking a
federal court to rule that he and other scientists should be able to
present their research at conferences without fear of legal repercussions,
which could include prosecution under the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act. The DMCA states that circumventing a copy-protection technology can
be considered a criminal offense, a provision that is currently seeing its
first use in the case of Russian hacker Dmitry Sklyarov, who currently
faces such charges from the Justice Department. Felten's research was part
of a challenge posed by the recording industry's Secure Digital Music
Initiative (SDMI) to see if anyone could in fact crack its security
technology.

o Publisher Ziff Davis Media Replaces CEO

New York -- Ziff Davis Media, a publisher of technology-related magazines
and websites including ZDNet.com, announced that it has replaced James D.
Dunning, Jr. as chairman, president and CEO of the company. Board member
Avy Stein will replace Dunning as chairman and CEO until a replacement can
be found. Stein is a founding partner of Willis Stein and Partners, which
acquired Ziff Davis Publishing from Ziff-Davis Inc. in April 2000. The
company gave no explanation for the action, but maintained that it is not
seeking buyers for any of its titles and is still committed to the
launches of four new magazines. New York-based Ziff Davis Media laid off
50 employees, or about 5 percent of its total workforce in May, amid the
ongoing decline in online advertising. The company also recently closed
its Family PC magazine and its Zcast.tv streaming site.

o California Legalizes Online Horserace Wagering

Sacramento, Calif. -- Gov. Gray Davis signed a bill into law Monday that
makes it legal to wager on horses over the Internet or by phone in
California, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The law, which goes into effect
on Jan. 1, lets users make "advance deposits" into Internet accounts that
they can then use to bet on horses. Davis, who earlier vetoed a similar
bill, was persuaded by a change in federal law, a recommendation from the
state attorney general and a more solid belief that minors will be
prohibited from gambling online under the new bill he signed.

o Corporate Streaming Services to Generate $5 Billion by 2005

Scottsdale, Az. -- Providing streaming media services to businesses will
generate over $5 billion in revenues by 2005, according to a report
published Tuesday by market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group. Over
21,000 corporate sites will pay outside firms for streaming services in
2001, with that figure leaping by a factor of 10 to 225,000 in 2005, the
report predicts. "The fastest return on investment is obtained by
utilizing an outside streaming media service provider, who brings
extensive hosting infrastructure, digital asset management capabilities,
and a variety of other services that help companies get the 'best bang for
the buck' from this technology," said Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst
with In-Stat's Multimedia Broadband Services Group. Medium-size companies,
with lots of branch and remote offices but not enough funds to create
their own network, are predicted to be the biggest market for corporate
streaming media services.

o High-Speed Cable 'Net Access Jumps in Second Quarter

Washington, D.C. -- Nearly one million Americans ordered high-speed
Internet access through a cable operator provider during the second
quarter of 2001, according to a survey of members of the National Cable
and Telecommunications Association. The addition of 920,000 new
subscribers brought the total of cable modem customers to 5.5 million, or
8.5 percent of the total number of cable subscribers currently eligible to
receive the service. The report also said that 1.3 million subscribers
upgraded to or signed up for digital cable TV service, bringing the total
number of U.S. subscribers for that service to 12.2 million.

(San Francisco) A possible glitch in a piece of equipment designed by
Intel may cause a delay in the manufacturing process for Microsoft's Xbox
video game console, CNET reported on Tuesday. The problem, which was
confirmed by "several sources along the Xbox manufacturing chain," will
likely not affect the game's Nov. 8 launch date, if the company adequately
speeds up its production schedule.

(San Francisco) Several providers of print-on-demand services have
announced that they will raise prices for their titles, responding to
demands from retailers that they should have to pay less for them, Wired
News reported on Tuesday. E-publishers Xlibris and 1stbooks.com are set to
raise prices as much as 30 percent, while iUniverse has said that it will
wait and gauge the market. "The problem is that this wonderful,
tree-saving, warehouseless method of book publishing is being imposed upon
a horse-and-buggy model of sales," said Xlibris author and NPR commentator
Judith Jaquith.

(Washington, D.C.) The Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel, a group
commissioned by the U.S. Copyright Office to hold hearings that will
determine what rates will be paid to stream music online, heard testimony
on Tuesday from several recording artists, Variety reported. Session

royalties paid to labels and artists for streaming music, adding that
"radio just fell through the cracks," because in terrestrial radio only
