o Microsoft to Launch Free
Developer Tools to Create Xbox 360 Games
Seattle - Microsoft on Monday introduced a new set of
tools that it says will provide hobbyists, students and independent
developers with technology needed to create their own game titles
for the Xbox 360 video game console. The free XNA Game Studio
Express software will launch in beta on Aug. 30, and is expected to
ship in the fall. Aspiring developers can also join a "Creators'
Club" for a $99 annual subscription, which will allow them to build,
test and share their Xbox 360 games and provide access to materials
aimed at helping speed the game development process. Microsoft said
that ten colleges, including the University of Southern California,
Georgia Tech College of Computing and Southern Methodist University
Guildhall, have already pledged to integrate console game
development and XNA Game Studio Express into their curricula. "XNA
Game Studio Express will ignite innovation and accelerate
prototyping, forever changing the way games are developed," said
Chris Satchell, general manager of the Game Developer Group at
Microsoft. "We are looking forward to the day when all the resulting
talent-sharing and creativity transforms into a thriving community
of user-created games on Xbox 360."

o Fox to Sell
Downloadable Movies, TV Shows on MySpace, Other Sites
Los Angeles - Twentieth Century Fox and Fox Interactive
Media -- both units of News Corporation -- announced on Monday plans
to begin offering Fox movies and TV shows on a download-to-own basis
from the company's stable of websites, including the social
networking site MySpace.com. Beginning in October, video games site
IGN.com will be the first Fox Interactive Media property to offer
movies including "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "The Omen," and TV
series like "24" and "Prison Break" for download through its
Direct2Drive digital distribution service. The companies did not say
when they would begin marketing $19.99 Fox movies and $1.99 per
episode TV shows to the MySpace community, or to other sites like
Rotten Tomatoes and Film Force. "Today marks an important step as we
continue to build a bridge between the worlds of user-generated and
top-quality, professional content, further enhancing our range of
consumer offerings across both free, ad-supported and paid download
business models," said Fox Interactive Media president Ross
Levinsohn.

o AOL
Acquires Web-Based Chat and IM Firm Userplane
Dulles, Va. - In its third acquisition of the year, AOL
said on Monday that it has paid an undisclosed amount for Userplane,
a Los Angeles-based developer of Web-based chat and instant
messaging tools. Founded in 2001 by Michael Jones, Nate Thelen and
Javier Hall, Userplane has licensed its chat technology to more than
100,000 websites and online communities, and has a presence in more
than 25 countries. Key customers include MySpace.com, Honda,
Date.com and IGN. Ted Leonsis, AOL's vice chairman, said the
acquisition will "expand and extend the reach and relevance" of the
company's instant messenger services, which currently have more than
83 million users. Userplane will operate as a unit of AOL, and its
12 employees will continue to be based in L.A. Earlier this year,
AOL also acquired Washington-based Lightningcast and Truveo.

o Report: Casual
Games Played to Relieve Stress, Relax, Keep Mind Sharp
Seattle - Nearly two-thirds (64%) of those who play casual
online games -- more simplistic puzzle, card, word, board and
classic arcade titles that can be played in a few minutes -- say
they play as a way to relax, while 53% say they play to relieve
stress and 42% cite them as a way to keep their minds sharp. The
findings come from a study conducted by Harris Interactive and focus
groups hosted by women's lifestyle expert Jennifer Louden on behalf
of RealNetworks, a distributor of online casual games. RealNetworks
said that 70% of people buying casual games from its service are
women age 40 and older. Of this group, 67% said they play at least
four times per week, and nearly half (47%) play every day. "It's a
wild concept, but I see this trend as a way for women and men to
establish mental balance and embrace a healthy form of comfort,"
said Louden. "Surprisingly, more and more women are turning to
casual gaming as a way to cope with stress and take a brief escape
from daily responsibilities."

Foster City, Calif. - New Line Cinema announced on Monday
that it partnered with on-demand e-commerce service CafePress.com to
allow fans to design their own merchandise for its upcoming film,
"Snakes on a Plane." The agreement enables users to become official
licensees of movie merchandise, and share in revenue when their
original items sell on CafePress.com. "The CafePress community of
designers react quickly to trends; we noticed Snakes on a Plane
inspired merchandise designs at about the same time the film began
to build buzz," said CafePress co-founder and vice president of
business development Maheesh Jain. "Partnering with New Line
harnesses the creativity of fans and creates a revolutionary new
licensing opportunity. We hope this opens opportunities with other,

o NBC
Sports to Launch Weekly Fantasy Game for "Sunday Night Football"
New York - NBC Sports will launch an online fantasy
football game this week to complement its "Sunday Night Football"
broadcasts, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Sunday Night
Fantasy Football" on NBCSports.com will allow players to use the
computer or their cell phones to pick football players who will
compete in next week's game, with results tallied each week and
prizes awarded to players. The game was designed by New York-based
Allstar Stats/Rotoworld.com. "We think people are looking for an
easy-to-play game," NBC Sports vice president of business
development Kevin Monaghan told THR. "They're going to continue to
compete in their season-long commissioner games. ... But people are
looking for a second game, an incremental game, that in a sense
gives them a more engaging way to watch the game." NBC will also
offer a season-long fantasy game called "Player Eliminator Game,"
also developed by Rotoworld.com, which will be offered exclusively
by NBC-owned stations and their affiliates.

o Report:
Global HDTV Households to Reach 20.3 Million by Year's End
Scottsdale, Ariz. - The number of worldwide households
with an HDTV set that receives HD programming is expected to grow
from 15 million in mid-2006 to 20.3 million by the end of the year,
and to over 55 million in 2009, according to a report from market
research firm In-Stat. Right now, the U.S. and Japan account for 91%
of all worldwide HDTV households, while Canada, Australia and South
Korea also claim significant numbers. Growth this year has been
spurred this year by the World Cup and the emergence of HDTV service
in new countries like China, Singapore and Mexico, In-Stat said.
Tempering growth will be a "disconnect" between HD services and the
penetration of HDTV sets, such as in the U.S., where only one-third
of households with HD-capable TV sets are actually using them to
watch HD programming.

Microsoft is Most Visited Web Property in June; Yahoo and Google
Follow
Reston, Va. - Microsoft topped the list of the most
visited global web properties in June, according to new figures from
Internet research firm comScore Networks. Microsoft-owned sites drew
approximately 500 million visitors, followed by Sunnyvale-based
Yahoo (481 million) and Mountain View-based Google (454 million).
Each company drew about 200 million more visitors than the next
closest web property. While the established Internet players grabbed
the top spots in the worldwide rankings, however, comScore said that
several upstarts have quickly found their way into the top 15
properties. Wikipedia ranked eighth on a worldwide basis, while
MySpace ranked 15th.
