o Icahn Recommends that Time Warner
Sell Cable Unit, Buy Back Stock
Dulles, Va. -- Billionaire financier Carl Icahn is recommending
that media giant Time Warner divest of its cable television
business, but -- at least publicly -- isn't putting pressure on the
company to sell America Online. In a statement released on Monday,
Icahn and several hedge funds, who collectively own 120 million
shares of Time Warner, said that Time Warner has "not moved quickly
enough" on measures to increase shareholder value. Icahn, who said
that he plans to meet with Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons, is
recommending that the company separate its cable business from its
content businesses, and immediately repurchase $20 billion in stock.
Reports have circulated in recent days that Icahn would recommend
that Time Warner sell its cable, publishing and AOL units.

o TiVo, IFC
Trial Download of Content Over Broadband to Video Recorders
Alviso, Calif. -- TiVo on Monday launched a trial of a video
download service, which will see movies and other video transmitted
over a broadband connection directly onto TiVo owners' hard drives.
The company partnered with the Independent Film Channel (IFC) on the
project; IFC will offer downloads of episodes of its first scripted
TV series -- "Hopeless Pictures," "Greg the Bunny" and "The
Festival" -- in advance of their network TV premieres. In addition
to the episodes themselves, the TiVo downloads will include outtakes
and other unaired footage from the IFC series. "The key element of
this trial for us is that it will enable consumers who do not
typically have access to IFC to download our three new original
series over broadband," said IFC executive vice president Evan
Shapiro. TiVo said that Limelight Networks will provide content
delivery network services for the trial, which it plans to expand to
a series of broadband features beginning in the fall.

o Sprint, NFL
Sign Exclusive Wireless Sponsorship Deal
Overland Park, Kan. -- Wireless carrier Sprint announced on
Monday that it has signed a deal with the National Football League
(NFL) to become the official wireless network sponsor of the league,
and offer live and on-demand video and other services exclusively to
Sprint subscribers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Beginning with the 2005 NFL season, Sprint will offer exclusive live
updates and video highlights following game TV broadcasts, in
addition to other live video and video-on-demand content; Sprint
will also offer NFL-themed ringtones, fantasy football, and polls
such as Pro Bowl and Super Bowl MVP voting on its network. "No other
sports marketing arrangement comes close to the fan benefits that
we've achieved with the NFL," said Tom Murphy, vice president of
sponsorships at Sprint. "It represents a clear departure from the
standard sports sponsorship, and delivers exclusively into the hands
of Sprint customers and fans an entirely new and interactive
experience."

o Study: 11%
of Blog Readers Use RSS Technology to Manage Feeds
New York --About 11% of weblog readers use RSS (Really Simple
Syndication) to sort through the increasing number of blogs
available, according to a new study by Nielsen/NetRatings. The firm
said that 5% of blog readers use feed aggregation software and more
than 6% percent use a feed aggregating web site to monitor RSS feeds
from blogs. "While RSS is an established technology, the growing
popularity of blogs has catapulted RSS into the spotlight as a
content personalization tool," said Jon Gibs, a senior research
manager for Nielsen/NetRatings. The majority of respondents to the
survey were less familiar with RSS feeds. Among the other
respondents, 23% understood RSS but did not use it, while two-thirds
either did not understand the technology or had never heard of it.

the wake of a controversy spawned by the revelation of a sexually
explicit mini-game in Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto: San
