o Amazon.com Launches Online Map
Service with Street-Level Images
Palo Alto, Calif. -- A9.com, a search engine development unit of
online retail giant Amazon.com, on Tuesday announced the launch of a
new interactive map service that includes street-level photographs
of local businesses and other locations. The Block View feature
includes 35 million images from 22 U.S. cities, shot by businesses
using trucks equipped with digital cameras, GPS receivers and
special software. The feature also includes images from more than a
dozen additional major U.S. metro areas. Amazon's online map service
will compete with increasingly competitive rival offerings from
Google, Yahoo and Microsoft's MSN.

o Study: No
Strong Link Between Violent Video Games and Aggression
Champaign, Ill. -- The first long-term study of the effects of
playing violent online video games has found that "robust exposure"
did not cause any substantial real-world aggression. Conducted by
researchers at the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the study
monitored 215 participants, some of whom played 56 hours of the
massively multiplayer roleplaying game "Asheron's Call 2" over the
course of a month. The results found no statistical difference
between players and a non-playing control group in terms of
increased argumentative behaviors, and "no strong effects associated
with aggression cased by this violent game," according to the
study's lead author, Dmitri Williams. "Asheron's Call 2" features
"fantasy" violence; Williams conceded that other games featuring
violence in outer space or urban environments may yield different
outcomes. "I'm not saying some games don't lead to aggression, but I
am saying the data are not there yet," added Williams. "Until we
have more long-term studies, I don't think we should make strong
predictions about long-term effects, especially given this finding."

o Nintendo Cuts
Price of DS Handheld to $129, Delays "Zelda" Release
Redmond, Wash. -- Nintendo of America on Tuesday announced a $20
price reduction for its Nintendo DS handheld, which will now sell
for $129. The company added that it plans to release "Nintendogs,"
its virtual pet game that has sold 700,000 units in Japan since its
launch, in the U.S. on Aug. 22. Other upcoming releases on the
dual-screen DS this year include "Advance Wars: Dual Strike" (Aug.
22); "Trace Memory" (Sept. 26); "Metroid Prime Pinball" (Oct. 24);
and "Mario & Luigi 2," set for release in some time in the fourth
quarter. Nintendo will also launch a Wi-Fi wireless gaming service
for the DS later this year. Meanwhile, the company also confirmed
that it will delay the release of its anticipated "The Legend of
Zelda: Twilight Princess" title for the GameCube from Christmas
until some time in 2006.

o Universal
Music Group Backs Sony's Blu-ray DVD Format
Santa Monica, Calif. -- Major record label Universal Music Group
(UMG) on Tuesday announced its support for Sony's next-generation,
higher-capacity DVD format, known as Blu-ray Disc. Sony's Blu-ray
will compete with another next-generation DVD format, Toshiba's HD
DVD, for dominance in what appears to be a looming format war like
the one seen between VHS and Beta in the videocassette market.
Universal Pictures, the movie studio division of GE's NBC Universal
-- and no longer related to the record label -- earlier announced
that it would release films on Toshiba's HD DVD.

o Podcasting
Start-up PodShow Raises $8.85 Million
San Francisco -- PodShow, a start-up providing directories,
community, technology and content programming for the budding
podcasting market, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $8.85
million in its first round of venture capital financing. Investors
in the round included Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sequoia
Capital and Sherpalo Ventures. Co-founded by former MTV personality
and podcasting developer Adam Curry, PodShow offers podcasting
software called CastBlaster, and hosts a network of podcast programs
that are distributed through Apple's iTunes and Sirius Satellite
Radio. The San Francisco-based company will use the funds launch
additional features, programs and technologies in the immediate
future.

o Infinium Labs
Names Former Xbox Exec Kevin Bachus as CEO
Seattle -- Infinium Labs, developer of the long-delayed Phantom
video game console, announced on Tuesday that its board of directors
has named company president and former Xbox executive Kevin Bachus
as its new chief executive. Infinium founder and former CEO Timothy
Roberts will continue to serve on the company's board. The company
also said it has consolidated its corporate operations from Florida
to Seattle, where Bachus has been based. "I intend to move swiftly
to assemble the missing pieces needed to bring the Phantom Game
Service to market," said Bachus. Infinium Labs has shown prototypes
of its broadband PC-based gaming service at the last two Electronic
Entertainment Expo video game shows, but has delayed the launch of
its product several times since 2003 -- giving it the dubious
distinction of being named Wired News' "Vaporware of the Year" for
2004.
