o AOL Acquires Video Game News
Site GameDaily
Dulles, Va. - Looking to bolster its content in the video
game arena, AOL said on Wednesday that it has paid an undisclosed
amount for GameDaily, a popular online video game publication from
San Francisco-based Gigex. Founded in 1995, Gigex serves the
mainstream gaming audience with its GameDaily.com website, and also
targets industry insiders with its GameDaily Biz trade newsletter.
AOL will acquire both the website and newsletter. AOL said that
GameDaily will become the flagship video games brand within its AOL
Games network, and will be united with other current content and
community features on the site. "Video game sites have become a
valuable resource for advertisers wishing to reach the young male
audience, and GameDaily is a brand that resonates with these highly
sought after consumers," said Ralph Rivera, the vice president and
general manager of AOL Games. The deal is AOL's second acquisition
announced this week, following its purchase of Userplane.

o CBS to Stream
Ad-Supported TV Episodes on Innertube
Los Angeles - Beginning in the fall, CBS will offer
streaming episodes of its prime-time network TV shows online the
morning after they first air on its Innertube broadband channel,
according to The Hollywood Reporter. The streamed episodes of "CSI,"
"Jericho," "NCIS," "Numbers" and "Survivor" will be accompanied by
advertisements, but will remain available to users throughout the
season. "Our belief all along is that all this is additive and
doesn't cannibalize the network television," Larry Kramer, president
of CBS Digital Media, told THR. "We know there's an audience out
there that will watch it and not be turned away by the advertising."
Rival ABC also plans to re-launch its own ad-supported Full Episode
Streaming service in the fall.

Satellite TV Gaining on Cable; Analog Subscribers Going Digital
Westlake Village, Calif. - Although satellite TV is
growing in popularity over cable services, cable TV subscribers are
rapidly upgrading from analog to digital cable services, according
to a study from J.D. Power and Associates. Overall, 88% of U.S.
households now subscribe to cable and/or satellite TV services; 29%
of these are satellite subscribers -- up 2% over the past year --
while 58% subscribe to cable, down from 60% a year ago. Fueled by
the availability of digital video, data and voice bundling options,
the number of digital cable as opposed to analog cable TV
subscribers has risen from 30% in 2005 to 41% in 2006. "With analog
cable subscribers increasingly converting to digital, this becomes a
major advantage for cable companies in the race against satellite
providers to maintain market share," said Steve Kirkeby, executive
director of telecommunications and technology research at J.D. Power
and Associates. The report also found that digital video recorder
usage has increased significantly over the past year, with 38% of
cable and 25% of satellite subscribers using set-tops supplied by
their provider; another 24% of cable/satellite subscribers report
using TiVo for digital video recorder services.

o AOL Gets $20
Million in Sponsorships for "Gold Rush" 'Net Reality Series
Los Angeles - AOL announced on Wednesday that it has
signed five exclusive sponsors for its "Gold Rush" interactive
online reality series joint project with Mark Burnett Productions
("Survivor," "The Apprentice"). The series, in which over $2 million
in gold will be buried across the nation and clues to its location
revealed online and on CBS, will be sponsored by Best Buy,
Chevrolet, Coca-Cola Zero, T-Mobile and Washington Mutual. Mediaweek
reported that sources familiar with the negotiations said the
sponsorships are worth close to $20 million. AOL Media Networks
executive vice president of sales and partnership alliances, Kathy
Kayse, said that sponsors actually helped shape the show's format
and product placement opportunities. "We were able to work with them
on ad programs while the i's were dotted and the t's were crossed,"
Kayse told Mediaweek. AOL Gold Rush is slated to launch on Sept. 13.

San Francisco - News and technology information publisher

Fewer Women-Managed Companies Landing Venture Capital
San Francisco - The percentage of venture-backed companies
with at least one woman in top management sunk to its lowest level
in a decade during the first half of 2006, according to figures
released on Wednesday by Dow Jones VentureOne. The firm said that
just 29.7% of VC-backed companies had women in management -- down
from nearly 33% last year and nearly 36% in 2004. Among those
companies, only 3.75% featured a woman as CEO, also a low since
statistics became available in 1997. In addition, companies founded

o Wired News:
Secrets of the Pirate Bay
Malmo, Sweden -
Wired News on Wednesday published a report that includes an
interview with operators of The Pirate Bay, the Sweden-based
BitTorrent tracker site that offers movies, music, games and other
copyrighted material for free download. The operation was recently
the target of a raid by Swedish authorities -- reportedly at the
behest of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) -- but
the site was back online just days after being shut down in Sweden.
The site's operators predict that The Pirate Bay will be able to
continue operating while the legal case being mounted against them
plays out, which could take three to five years -- by which time
BitTorrent will likely become outmoded by more advanced file-sharing
technologies. "The Pirate Bay will outlive its usefulness,"
28-year-old co-founder Fredrik Neij told Wired News.
