o "CBS Evening News" First Network
Newscast to Simulcast Online
New York - CBS Digital Media announced on Thursday that
"The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" will become the first
network evening news broadcast to be simulcast live on the Internet.
Beginning Sept. 5, the program will be available both simultaneously
with its TV broadcast, and on-demand any time after the live
simulcast. The free Internet broadcasts will be supported by
advertising. In addition to the nightly newscast, CBS Digital Media
will offer "Couric & Company," a daily news blog edited by CBS News
journalist Greg Kandra; "Eye to Eye," a daily on-demand feature
hosted by Couric that will offer extended interviews with
newsmakers; and an afternoon first look at the night's stories,
hosted by Couric from the newsroom -- "CBS News First Look with
Katie Couric." "This is a groundbreaking development in making the
program available to the largest possible audience," said CBS News
president Sean McManus. "For people who can't be in front of their
televisions when the Evening News is on, they can now watch the
program live on their computers."

o BearShare Launches
Legal, Subscription-Based File-Sharing Service
New York - MusicLab, a unit of peer-to-peer file-sharing
software developer iMesh, announced on Thursday the beta launch of
BearShare, its newly acquired file-sharing software that has been
transformed into a legal peer-to-peer network. New York-based iMesh
acquired the assets of BearShare, a Gnutella-based file-sharing
network, in May 2006. The new BearShare will be a subscription-based
file-sharing service, with rates comparable to current subscription
and single-track download services. The service will support
transfer of an estimated library of 2.5 million licensed songs from
major and indie labels to all portable players that support MP3 and
Microsoft's Windows Media Audio formats. BearShare will also offer
social networking features, allowing users to create their own
BearShare profiles. The service is now available in the U.S. and
Canada with a 30-day free trial; iMesh said it expects to launch the
same features on the iMesh peer-to-peer network in coming weeks.

o IMAX Faces
Shareholder Class Action Suit
Radnor, Pa. - A shareholder class action lawsuit has been
filed in U.S. District Court in New York against large-screen format
movie exhibitor IMAX, which includes allegations the company
reported revenue from a number of theaters before they opened, to
make its finances more attractive to suitors. IMAX reported on Aug.
9 that it received an inquiry from the SEC regarding the timing of
its revenue recognition, which sent the company's shares plummeting
over 40% in the following day's trading. The law firm of Schiffrin &
Barroway's suit alleges that IMAX recognized revenue in the fourth
quarter of 2005 from at least ten theaters before the theaters had
actually opened for business.

o Former CEO of
Gambling Site BetOnSports Released on $1 Million Bond
St. Louis - The former CEO of London-based online gambling
firm BetOnSports, who was arrested last month by U.S. authorities
and indicted on charges related to allowing U.S. citizens to place
wagers, was freed on Wednesday on $1 million bond, Reuters reported.
David Carruthers, 48, will be restricted within St. Louis while he,
the company and a dozen other executives defend themselves against a
22-count federal indictment. A federal judge in St. Louis has also
ordered BetOnSports not to take bets from within the U.S. until at
least Sept. 1; the company must also provide refunds to all U.S.
bettors. BetOnSports terminated Carruthers as CEO after his arrest;
the company's shares have also been suspended for nearly a month.
BetOnSports is said to derive the majority of its revenue from
online gamblers in the U.S.

o Kodak,
NCM to Develop Digital Cinema Software for Movie Theaters
Los Angeles - Kodak Digital Cinema announced that it has
partnered with National CineMedia (NCM), a joint venture between a
number of theater owners that develops pre-feature advertising and
entertainment, to develop digital cinema theater management
software. The new Kodak-branded software will allow theater owners
to integrate digital cinema aspects into their overall operations,
including show presentation, ticketing, feature and trailer
scheduling and playback reconciliation. "We believe the theater
management software will bring new interoperability to theatres that
install our software," said Bob Mayson, general manager and vice
president of Kodak Digital Motion Imaging. "It is expected to
transform standalone components into automated networked systems to
help exhibition and studios more fully realize the potential of
digital cinema." The companies said that beta testing of the
software is expected to begin in the fourth quarter. Kodak will
initially market the product to the 15 exhibition chains worldwide
that have already installed its digital pre-show systems, and NCM
partners AMC Entertainment, Cinemark USA and Regal Entertainment
Group.

San Francisco - CNET News.com on Thursday reported on mobile
virtual network operators (MVNO) like Disney Mobile, Mobile ESPN and

various analysts, Disney Mobile and Mobile ESPN are expected to lose
$135 million in 2006, while the two services and Helio are estimated
to have less than 10,000 subscribers apiece. "The results, at least
initially, even though it's only been six months, were disappointing
and we're monitoring this carefully," Disney CEO Robert Iger said
recently of Mobile ESPN. Other MVNO's have been relatively more
successful. Boost Mobile, which launched in 2002, claimed 250,000 in

Stockholm, Sweden - Wired News on Thursday published the second
in a two-part series on Swedish file-sharing network The Pirate Bay,
and the political party that has sprung up to defend free-file
sharing in Swedish politics. After a police raid on The Pirate Bay
last May prompted street protests in Sweden, membership in the
Pirate Party swelled to eclipse that of the nation's Green Party,
which holds 17 seats in Sweden's parliament. Another, older Swedish
piracy-advocacy group called Piratbyran ("Pirate Bureau") claims
58,000 members. "(Sweden has) become a copyright haven, a territory

Monique Wadsted, the Swedish representative of the Motion Picture
