o Amazon to Sell Short-Form Literature Works for 49 Cents Each

Seattle -- Online retailer Amazon.com on Friday introduced Amazon Shorts, a new digital-only format for short-form literature, though which it will sell works for 49 cents each. Works will include short stores, one-act plays, personal memoirs and alternate chapters and scenes to well-known stories, from authors such as Ann Beattie, Richard Rhodes, Robin Cook, Daniel Wallace, Gregory David Roberts and Audrey Niffenegger. The 49-cent works will be sold either as a download in the PDF format or delivered in a plain-text e-mail. "Publishers have always had a hard time selling and marketing the single, short-form work -- the novella, for instance, or the novelette, or its even more diminutive cousin, the novelini -- and these days it's even harder. Amazon.com has created a new way for authors to get that kind of work out there, which is incredibly exciting," said author Daniel Wallace.

o Akamai to Measure Worldwide Popularity of News Stories in Real-Time

Cambridge, Mass. -- Akamai Technologies, a content delivery network that speeds the delivery of 15% of all global Internet traffic, this week introduced a service that aims to map the relative significance of news stories online by tabulating their popularity on 100 news sites in real-time. The Akamai Net Usage Index for News will gauge total visitors per minute to popular news sites in six global regions, and catalog the interest in particular stories by the minute, day, month, quarter and year. "When you can get down to the minute of a day and correlate spikes in news site traffic, you can really begin to see what was going on at that moment," Akamai CEO Paul Sagan told Reuters. The index shows that the most popular stores of late have been the London subway bombings; Hurricane Emily; the Space Shuttle mission and Indian monsoon; and the Michael Jackson verdict.

o Report: Canadian MP3 Player Sales Tripled Over Past Year

Toronto -- Sales of MP3 players in Canada more than tripled between June 2004 and June 2005, beating out flat-screen televisions and digital cameras as the fastest-growing consumer electronics market category for the period, according to a report from NPD Group. Apple's iPod was the dominant MP3 player in the segment, which saw 47% of Canadians purchasing MP3 players for themselves and 47% buying them as gifts. Among those buying players for themselves, 34% said they researched their purchase online, while only 7% cited television ads. "The MP3 market has grown at an incredible rate over the last year, but with only 40 per cent of Canadian households in possession of a digital music player, this market is still in its early stages of development," said NPD Group senior account manager Pam Buckley. The study also found Apple's iTunes and PureTracks were the most popular digital music services in Canada.

o Report: W. European Mobile Market Grows 20% in 2nd Qtr

Brussels -- The Western European mobile-phone market recorded 20% year-on-year growth in the second quarter, according to the latest report by market analysis firm IDC. The report said that more than 37.6 million units were shipped over the same period, with sales driven mostly by increased traction in low-end segments and demand for new feature-rich handsets. Taking into account the second quarter's relatively robust numbers, IDC predicted that the Western European mobile market would grow by about 11% this year. "The sustained advancement in technological specifications is further shortening product life cycles and providing consumers with the necessary incentive to upgrade handsets, while providing vendors with new opportunities to position devices as converged multimedia solutions and cooperatively brand handsets to leverage brand strength from parallel markets such as imaging and music," said IDC analyst Geoff Blaber.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Friday investigated claims by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) that pirated CD and DVD production in the U.S. is now largely controlled by organized criminal syndicates -- a counterfeiting "mafia". "The business model is similar to dealing drugs," MPAA deputy director of anti-piracy Chuck Hausman told Wired News. The groups have succeeded in spurring government action: "Intellectual-property theft has been linked to organized crime and, potentially, may fund terrorist organizations attracted by the profitability of these offenses," reads a report from the Justice Dept.'s Intellectual Property Task Force. However, there are currently zero U.S. convictions related to organized crime and media piracy; the entertainment industry lobby and authorities say that investigations currently underway could yield the first prosecutions.
