o Friendster Online Social Network
Raises $10 Million
New York - Online social networking pioneer Friendster has
raised $10 million in new venture capital financing, The Wall Street
Journal reported. DAG Ventures led the investment round; previous
investors Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers and Benchmark Capital
also participated. Founded in 2002, San Francisco-based Friendster
was initially the most popular social networking service. But the
site counted only 1 million unique users in July, compared with 46
million for rival MySpace, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.
Friendster recently announced that it was awarded a patent on social
networking technology, which it may eventually use to seek licenses
from competitors like MySpace. The company told The Journal that it
intends to focus on twenty- and thirty-something users, rather than
the younger demographic targeted by MySpace and Facebook.com.

o CTO of AOL Resigns
Following Privacy Breach
Dulles, Va. - Just weeks after accidentally releasing
three months worth of search queries for 650,000 of its members, AOL
said in an internal memo that CTO Maureen Govern has resigned,
Reuters reported on Monday. Former CTO John McKinley will take over
the role on an interim basis. Two other employees in the company's
research department reportedly also have stepped down. Privacy
advocates have been pushing for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
to investigate AOL after the company released the data, which was
linked to random ID numbers. Earlier this month, the Electronic
Frontier Foundation (EFF) called for the FTC to require AOL to
notify affected customers, as well as to stop logging search data
except where absolutely necessary.

o Bankrupt
Music Retailer Tower Records Expects Imminent Sale
Sacramento, Calif. - Bankrupt music retail store chain
Tower Records has announced plans to sell the company before the
holiday shopping season through a Chapter 11 proceeding. The company
added that it has secured $85 million in debtor-in-possession
financing, which will fund operations while it completes the sale.
Founded in 1960, Sacramento, Calif.-based Tower Records said it is
currently evaluating letters of intent from prospective buyers for
its 89 retail stores in 20 states, and has set in motion a process
that will "ultimately insure a sale of the company within
approximately 60 days of the filing date." The company retained
Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin in March to seek a buyer for the
company.

o SanDisk Debuts
8GB Flash MP3 Player; Same Price as 4GB iPod Nano
Milpitas, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of Flash memory cards
and MP3 players, on Tuesday introduced the first 8GB flash-based MP3
player. The Sansa e280 will sell for $249, the same price as Apple's
4GB iPod Nano. The new SanDisk MP3 player can also be expanded to
10GB with a microSD card, making for a capacity of up to 2,500
songs. Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk also lowered the prices for
its entire line of flash-based MP3 players; its 2GB Sansa will now
sell for $139, while the 4GB model was discounted to $179 and the
6GB Sansa will be priced at $219. "The most costly ingredient in a
flash-based MP3 player is the flash memory. Since we make the flash
memory, we essentially remove the middleman and pass that savings
directly to the consumer," said Eric Bone, director of audio/video
product marketing at SanDisk.

N.Y. Times: Music Industry Targets Guitar Tab Websites
New York - The New York Times on Monday reported on websites
offering free guitar tablature -- a means of notating music that
uses numbers on the fret board instead of traditional notes -- that
have lately become the targets of copyright lawsuit threats from
music publishers. The National Music Publishers' Association claims
that such sites are essentially banking off their copyrighted
materials, like the original Napster, adding that the most-popular
printed tablatures now sell only 5,000 copies, down from 25,000 in
the early '90s. However, Oxford University professor Jonathan
Zittrain told The Times that the courts have not yet ruled on
whether guitar tabs constitute a "fair use" of a copyrighted work,
or a "derivative work" deserving of royalties.
