o Disney Plans
Fall Re-launch of Ad-Supported Free TV Show Downloads
Aspen, Colo. - The Walt Disney Company said that
experiments offering ad-supported, free downloadable versions of its
ABC and Disney Channel TV programming on the Internet have been
successful, and will continue in the fall, CNET News.com reported.
Disney-ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney said Disney
Channel shows were downloaded 37 million times between June 2 and
August 3 on DisneyChannel.com, which reported 1.5 billion page views
during the period. Meanwhile, the free downloadable episodes of ABC
TV shows like "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" were downloaded 5.6
million times during a two-month trial of the network's "My ABC"
service. "The platforms didn't cannibalize the television exposure
of our series," Sweeney told attendees at a technology policy
conference. "We weren't cannibalizing our iTunes offering." Disney
also offers episodes of both Disney Channel and ABC programs for
purchase and download from Apple's iTunes Store for $1.99 each.
