Video-Sharing Site Grouper for $65 Million
Culver City, Calif. - Sony Pictures Entertainment
announced on Wednesday its $65 million acquisition of Grouper, a
video-sharing site. Under the terms, Sausalito, Calif.-based Grouper
will retain its current management. Sony said Grouper is currently
the second-largest independent online video community; the site lets
users upload and edit videos and share them on their own websites,
blogs and social network pages, as well as download them to portable
devices like the iPod and PSP. "This acquisition demonstrates the
breadth of involvement of Sony Corporation in the field of digital
online entertainment," said SPE chairman and CEO Michael Lynton.
"Many people in the Grouper community use Sony cameras to create
videos and Sony VAIO computers and mobile devices to store and view
them. It makes sense to complete the circle by having Grouper be a
part of Sony Pictures Entertainment."

Sponsored Links on Facebook Social Network
Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it
has signed a multi-year agreement with Facebook, the second
most-popular social networking site behind MySpace, to provide
banner ads and sponsored links to the site's 9 million users.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Google, the market
leader in sponsored ads, recently signed a $900 million deal to
provide search ads to MySpace's over 100 million users. Microsoft
said it began talks with Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook only last
week, and expects its sponsored ads to appear on the site in early
fall. "Our collaboration with Facebook is about joining our
cutting-edge advertising technology and sales force with a true
innovator in social networking," said Steve Berkowitz, senior vice
president of the online services group at Microsoft.

Arts Acquires German Game Developer Phenomic
Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts said on Wednesday
that it has acquired German game developer Phenomic for an
undisclosed sum. Phenomic Game Development, which will now be known
as EA Phenomic, is a creator of real time strategy games for the PC,
console and online. The company is responsible for titles including
the "SpellForce" and "The Settlers" game franchises. It will remain
in its current location in Germany and work within the management
structure of EA's studios in Europe.

Details Xbox 360 Accessories; Expands Global Distribution
Leipzig, Germany - Microsoft on Wednesday introduced
several new gaming accessories for its Xbox 360 console, including a
USB camera, wireless racing wheel, wireless headset and wireless
gaming receiver. The Xbox Live Vision camera, set to launch in the
U.S. on Sept. 19, will ship with an Xbox 360 Headset, one-month
subscription to Xbox Live and two Xbox Live Arcade games for $39; a
version with a one-year Xbox Live subscription will cost $79. The
Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel will ship in November for $149 and
come with a special force feedback version of "Project Gotham Racing
3." The $59 Wireless Headset is also slated for release in November,
while the $19 Wireless Gaming Receiver -- which supports use of Xbox
360 wireless accessories on Windows PCs -- will ship in late
December. Microsoft also on Wednesday announced plans to expand
distribution of the Xbox 360 this fall into the Czech Republic,
Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, as well as in South Africa.

Founder Launches Venture to Fund Asian Internet Firms
Los Angeles - MySpace.com founder Brad Greenspan on
Wednesday announced the launch of a new venture, BroadWebAsia (BWA),
which will partner with and power social networking, entertainment
and Internet search properties across Asia. The company received
initial funding from Greenspan, and is seeking to raise up to $50
million for other Asian acquisitions and investments. BWA said it
has already signed agreements to invest in and partner with more
than 20 Chinese Internet firms, including BBMAO.com, a meta-search
engine focused on China that counts over 70,000 unique daily users.
"The launch of BroadWebAsia will allow me to implement my proven
U.S. Internet strategy in China, where there are more than 120
million Internet users, making the country second only to the U.S.
in terms of online users," said Greenspan. "With less than 10
percent of the Chinese population online, there is vast potential
for growth."

SellaBand Debuts New Online Distribution Model for Developing
Artists
Amsterdam - SellaBand on Wednesday announced the launch of
its community music site that offers a new distribution model for
developing artists. The site lets bands upload their self-recorded
songs, and "Believers" in the online community can purchase "Parts"
of the band in $10 increments. Once 5,000 Parts have been sold, the
band gets to put the $50,000 raised toward recording an album with a
good studio and production team, with the resulting 5,000 limited
edition CDs shipped to each Believer who bought a Part of the band.
Before a band's 5,000 Parts have been sold, Believers may switch
their investment to another band, invest additional money, or
withdraw their investment altogether. The songs from each CD
produced on SellaBand will also be offered as free downloads on the
site, with ad revenue split equally between artists, Believers and
the company. All the while, acts using SellaBand are free to sign a
record deal, and retain ownership of their master recordings after
one year. "We want the legal commitments for musicians to be as
light-weight as possible," said former Sony Music exec and SellaBand
managing director Johan Vosmeijer. "Basically, we see SellaBand as a
sort of trampoline for bands to use. Ultimately it is up to the
artist to see how high they can jump, but we won't hold them back in
any way or form."

Los Angeles - TV Guide Mobile Entertainment, a unit of
Gemstar-TV Guide International, announced on Wednesday that it has
partnered with Palo Alto, Calif.-based 4INFO to launch TV listings
for mobile phones. The service is now available to all mobile users
regardless of carrier, via either SMS or WAP. The TV Guide mobile
service allows viewers to look up television channels and show times
based on regional or local service providers while out of town or
just away from home.

of Music Coalition Offers Free Health Insurance Advice to Musicians
Washington - The Future of Music Coalition, a
Washington-based non-profit that represents the interests of artists
in the digital music realm, on Wednesday introduced an online health
insurance guidance program for musicians. The Health Insurance
Navigation Tool (HINT) will help musicians -- who have unique
situations like fluctuating income due to month-to-month varying
performance schedules -- to navigate plans and locate regional
organizations online. The service will also offer free, confidential
30-minute phone consultations with health insurance experts. The
Future of Music Coalition said HINT was made possible by a grant
from the Nathan Cummings Foundation.
