o MPAA Uses File-Sharing Logs to Sue
Another 286 Movie-Swappers
Washington -- The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
announced on Thursday that it has sued another 286 alleged Internet
movie file-swappers for copyright infringement. The group said it
gained information on those sued from the logs of sites shut down
earlier this year, which included BitTorrent peer-to-peer network
hubs LokiTorrent and SuprNova. "John Doe" lawsuits have been filed
in order to match the information culled from the sites with
identities obtained from Internet service providers. "Internet movie
thieves be warned: You have no friends in the online community when
you are engaging in copyright theft," said MPAA senior vice
president John Malcom. The MPAA filed its first round of lawsuits
against movie file-swappers in Nov. 2004, and has since acted to
compel law enforcement inside the U.S. and abroad to crack down on
BitTorrent hubs like LokiTorrent.

o Sirius
Introduces Handheld Satellite Radio, Traffic Data Service
New York -- Sirius Satellite Radio, a provider of subscription
radio programming, on Thursday introduced its first handheld
satellite radio, which also allows users to record and store up to
50 hours of Sirius content, or their own digital music files. The
Sirius S50, which will go on sale in October for $359, features a
black exterior, color screen and voice-assisted channel navigation.
The company also unveiled the Starmate Replay and Sirius One, its
smallest plug-and-play radios for vehicles to date, which will also
ship in October. The $129 Starmate Replay will offer 44 minutes of
"replay" capability, enabling TiVo-like pause, rewind and
fast-forward functions, while the $79 Sirius One is small enough to
clasp to a car's sun visor. New York-based Sirius also said it
partnered with Navteq to launch a traffic data service for 22 major
U.S. cities in November.

o
MTV to Offer
Exclusive Broadband Content for Video Music Awards
New York -- MTV plans to offer exclusive broadband content for
the upcoming Video Music Awards on its MTV Overdrive broadband video
channel, to include celebrity arrivals and interviews, and musical
performances produced especially for the online channel. The "My
VMAs" section on the MTV website will launch on Aug. 29, following
the conclusion of the live TV broadcast of the awards, and will
offer a live VMA "After Show" with MTV News personalities. The
entire broadcast will then be made available on MTV Overdrive for 30
days thereafter. "My VMAs will be a true hybrid viewer experience
where the audience can either lean back and watch the show as it
unfolds or lean forward and create their own unique version of the
show on demand," said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music
Group.

o Report:
Majority of MP3 Player Owners Won't Pay Over $10 for Subscriptions
Dallas, Texas -- A majority of consumers worldwide are not
willing to pay more than $10 for portable music subscription
services, according to a report from market research firm Parks
Associates. Currently, only Yahoo's $6.99 Music Unlimited service is
under the $10 price point; competing services from Napster and
Rhapsody each cost $14.95 per month. Forty-one percent of U.S. MP3
player owners surveyed by the firm won't pay more than $10 for a
service that lets them download unlimited tracks to their MP3
players, compared with 61% in the U.K., 49% in France, 52% in
Germany and 56% in China -- with costs adjusted for local
currencies. The firm further found that one-third of all MP3 player
owners surveyed thought such subscription services should be free.
"Companies like Yahoo can afford to keep the price low because they
have other revenue streams to subsidize their music services," said
Parks Associates research analyst Harry Wang. "Pure-plays like
Napster may not be able to lower their prices, but to counter
low-cost competition, they can ally with telecom service providers
or other broadband carriers to make their music services part of a
bundled package. Napster's recent partnership with Bell South is a
positive move in this direction."

o Pearl Jam to
Offer Live Show MP3 Downloads for $9.99
New York -- The rock band Pearl Jam announced that it plans to
begin offering high-quality, unprotected downloads of recordings
from live concerts on its upcoming tour for $9.99, beginning on
Sept. 1. The "digital bootlegs" will be mixed in real-time by Pearl
Jam engineer Brett Eliason, whose Basecamp Productions will also
provide the software that delivers and manages the downloads. Along
with a 192kbps MP3 file of each performance, the bootlegs will
include downloadable artwork, and a slideshow of photos taken during
each particular show. The band has also in the past offered live CD
recordings from every show on its 2002 and 2003 tours. "A lot of the
band's fans want to own a copy of the live show they saw in their
hometown, or a particularly standout show they hear about from other
fans," said Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis. "Making the bootlegs
available in digital form is just a natural evolution for the
bootleg CD program, and a response to more and more fans turning to
the web to buy their music."

o Report: U.S.
Broadband Providers Added 1.7 Million Subscribers in Q2
Silver Spring, Md. -- U.S. cable operators and telephone
companies gained approximately 1.7 million new high-speed Internet
customers during the second quarter of 2005, bringing the total
number of broadband households to 39.7 million, according to new
research by Pike & Fischer. The total subscriber count is up 12.5
million over the 27.2 million recorded in the second quarter of
2004, and represents an estimated 34% of American households. Cable
companies added about 858,600 new customers, only slightly ahead of
the 856,400 added by the telecommunications firms.

o OECD:
Internet Telephony to Revolutionize Telecommunications
Paris -- A new report by the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of the world's leading
industrialized countries, has identified Internet telephony (VoIP)
as the next technological innovation to shake up the global
telecommunications industry. "The growing popularity of Internet
telephony threatens the fixed-line revenues of traditional carriers,
especially for international calls," the OECD said. "VoIP presents a
challenge to mobile telephones, which in many countries are now more
numerous than fixed connections." The OECD report also said that the
growing popularity of downloading video from the Internet would
significantly reduce the time people spend watching free-to-air TV,
driving down audience share and advertising revenue for broadcasts
and making it harder for public-service broadcasters to meet their
social policy objectives.
