o Toshiba to Manufacture
Microsoft's Zune Digital Media Player
Los Angeles -- Microsoft has confirmed that Japanese
electronics firm Toshiba will be the manufacturer of its forthcoming
Zune digital media player, a fact revealed in documents Toshiba
filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week.
The documents show the Zune will feature a 3-inch screen, 30GB hard
drive and FM tuner. A user's manual included in the filing indicates
the Zune will feature wireless networking capabilities that will
allow users to stream promotional copies of songs, albums and
playlists -- as well as photos -- to up to four other nearby
players. Microsoft has previously said that it plans to have at
least one Zune model ready for shipping in time for the holiday
shopping season.

o XM Satellite Radio
Regains FCC Compliance for Radios; Shares Jump 4.6%
Washington - XM Satellite Radio announced on Friday that
the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has determined that
several of its products have regained compliance with its emissions
standards, and may resume production. The FCC notified both XM and
rival Sirius in July that several of their radios with FM
transmitters were in violation of signal emissions standards,
forcing them to halt production of the radios. Sirius learned that
its products had regained compliance on Aug. 10. Washington-based XM
said today that it is notifying manufacturers of the Audiovox Xpress,
Delphi RoadyXT and XM Sportscaster plug-and-play radios that they
may resume production. The devices are expected to be available at
retail for the holiday shopping season. Shares of the company rose
4.58% on Friday on news of the FCC decision.

o Judge
Blocks Louisiana Video Game Law
Baton Rogue, La. - A federal judge has blocked a Louisiana
law that would ban the sale of video games to minors if an average
person would conclude the games "depict violence in a manner
patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community
with respect to what is suitable for minors." U.S. District Court
Judge James Brady granted the Entertainment Software Association's (ESA)
request for a preliminary injunction against implementation of the
law, which was signed into law by Gov. Kathleen Blanco in June.
Judge Brady said the law is likely to be shown to violate First
Amendment free speech protections, as have numerous similar laws
enacted in other states. "In the post-Katrina era, voters should be
outraged that the legislature and governor wasted their tax dollars
on this ill-fated attack on video games," said ESA president Doug
Lowenstein.

o Viacom's BET
Acquires Ownership of BET Interactive from Investor Group
Washington - Viacom's BET Networks announced on Friday
that it has paid an undisclosed sum to buyout the original
investment group that helped launch its BET Interactive online unit.
Initial BET Interactive backers included Microsoft, News
Corporation, Liberty Media, InterActiveCorp and former investors
from hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons' 360HipHop.com. The BET.com
portal first launched in 2000, and in June counted more than 2.6
million unique monthly users. "This is a great day for BET Networks
and BET Interactive as we've seen our goal of 100 percent
controlling interest in our Internet property come true," said BET
Networks chairman and CEO Debra Lee. "The growth and success
achieved by BET.com has been nothing short of remarkable in a
tumultuous marketplace that saw many interactive ventures fail.

Today, Gallup Launch Weekly Fan Football Poll
McLean, Va. - Joining the ranks of coaches, the media and
even computers, USA Today said on Friday that it has partnered with
Gallup to launch a weekly poll allowing fans to vote for the top
teams in college football. The first poll results appear in Friday's
edition of the paper, as well as on USAToday.com, and is based on a
sample of 400 college football fans recruited by Gallup. Fans had to
demonstrate a high degree of interest in and knowledge of the sport
and commit to being a serious evaluator of teams as the season
unfolds. One in four fans met the screening criteria and agreed to
submit weekly rankings of the top 10 teams in the country. Weekly
poll results will appear on Monday nights on the web, and on
Tuesdays in the paper.
