o Industry Standard Files for Bankruptcy

San Francisco -- Standard Media International -- the company that
published business and technology magazine Industry Standard -- filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, CNET reported. The company
ceased publication of the magazine several weeks ago and laid off all but
20 of its 180 employees. Its creditors include landlords with whom
the company signed long-term leases for large office spaces.

o Elcomsoft to Give Sklyarov's Presentation in Amsterdam

San Francisco -- The presentation on software that can be used to crack
Adobe's e-book security technology that landed Russian programmer Dmitry
Sklyarov in jail will once again be presented by his company at a security
conference in Amsterdam on Nov. 22, Wired News reported Tuesday. Sklyarov
was arrested by the FBI on a tip from Adobe Systems that his software
violated a provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that
prohibits circumventing copy-protection technologies. Alexander Katalov,
president of ElcomSoft -- the Russian firm where Sklyarov works, which
distributed the software -- will give a presentation updated by Sklyarov
in the Netherlands, which does not have laws similar to the U.S. Digital
Millenium Copyright Act.

o Cable Access Winning Over DSL in Broadband Market

Philadelphia -- Due to a lack of added features like video-on-demand and
games, rising prices and a growing number of bankrupt companies that once
provided the service, DSL is losing ground to the cable modem in the
market for high-speed Internet access, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The
United States had two million DSL subscribers at the end of 2000, compared
with about 3.6 million cable modem subscribers, according to figures
provided by the FCC. Analyst firm TeleChoice expects the DSL market to
have about 4.5 million subscribers by the end of 2001, and as many as 13.9
million by the end of 2004. However, one factor hampering the growth of
DSL are the failures of service providers such as Covad, Rhythms
NetConnections and Focal Communications Corp. -- all of whom have declared
bankruptcy. Larger providers such as Verizon and BellSouth reported
decreased subscriber growth in their latest figures. "Cable has been doing
a slightly better job in adding other services like video, gaming,
voice... I think you're going to see cable have a distinct advantage until
DSL starts to add services and have something there that's going to draw
people in," said TeleChoice analyst Adam Guglielmo.

o MIT Sues Sony Over Digital TV Patents

Cambridge, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Institue of Technology (MIT) has
sued Sony Electronics over four patents the company uses in its digital TV
consumer products, according to published reports. MIT has filed similar
lawsuits against Sharp and Toshiba America, which were dropped after the
companies agreed to licensing agreements for the MIT technology. MIT and
Sony were part of a technology alliance created by the FCC in 1993 that
was charged with creating a standard for digital television.

o PacketVideo to Provide Technology for DoCoMo Video Phones

San Diego, Calif. -- PacketVideo, a developer of wireless streaming video
technology, announced on Tuesday that Japanese wireless network operator
NTT DoCoMo will use its technology to deliver streaming video
simultaneously to multiple cell phone users. The technology will create a
standard platform which content providers can use to deliver video to cell
phones and handheld computers. A trial of the service with 32 companies
providing content will commence in September, and NTT DoCoMo plans to
launch the service on its 3G network on Oct. 1.
