Snocap to Enable Artists to Sell Songs on MySpace
Los Angeles - Social networking site MySpace announced on
Tuesday a partnership with Snocap, Napster creator Shawn Fanning's
digital music licensing company, that will result in artists and
record labels being able to sell music directly from their MySpace
pages. "By introducing a powerful commercial tool set into the
industry, we expect to see artists translate their community reach
into sales, ultimately allowing more bands to make a living and
connect with fans," said MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe. Under the deal,
Snocap will provide digital music retail tools for MySpace, allowing
artists to set pricing, create stores and sell their music in the
unprotected MP3 format. Snocap CEO Rusty Rueff told The New York
Times that MySpace will charge each band or label about 45 cents,
which it will share with Snocap, as compared with the 35 cents Apple
makes on each iTunes song purchase. Transactions will be filled
through online payments firm PayPal, rather than directly through
credit cards. The MySpace music retail service is expected to be
broadly available in the U.S. by the end of 2006.

Report: Half of Users Watch
Videos Online; Only 1 in 5 Full
Movies/TV Shows
New York - More than half of Internet users (54%) are
watching video online, but only one in five has watched or
downloaded a full-length movie or TV show, according to a new AP-AOL
Video survey. Nearly three-quarters (71%) of online video users said
they'd prefer to watch an ad before a video in order to watch the
video for free, while 23% say they'd rather pay for ad-free videos.
News clips were the most frequently viewed online videos (72%),
followed by TV/movie clips (59%), music videos (48%), sports
highlights (44%) and amateur videos (43%). "There's no question that
online video usage is growing faster than most predicted,
particularly as more diverse, appealing and high quality branded
video content is being made available on the Web," said AOL
executive vice president Kevin Conroy. "As more and more Web users
adopt broadband, demand for online video of all types, including
news, music videos and concerts, TV and movies, sports highlights,
and user generated video mash-ups will continue to grow at a very
fast pace." The survey also found that one in ten said they now
watch less television as a result of online video.
