o Sony Develops TV Chip That Allows Viewers to Zoom on Images

Tokyo -- Sony has developed new technology that will allow TV viewers to zoom in on any part of an image broadcast on their screens while maintaining a sharp focus, the Associated Press reported. Sony demonstrated its "Digital Reality Creation Multifunction v2" chip on Wednesday, but did not provide any details on when the zoom function might become available on televisions, or as a separate set-top box attachment. The company said the technology abandons the tradition zoom technique of stretching horizontal and vertical lines for a new method that "digitally enhances the signal to communicate gloss, depth and texture."

o Report: TiVo, Netflix Close to Deal for Movie Download Service

Los Gatos, Calif. -- In a move with potentially huge implications for home entertainment connoisseurs, the new issue of Newsweek magazine is reporting that Netflix is close to a deal with TiVo that would allow subscribers of Netflix's online DVD rental service to download movies through their TiVo digital video recorders and a broadband connection. Citing an "anonymous source," Newsweek said that the deal could be approved by TiVo's board as early as this week. To use the feature, consumers would need to subscribe to both the Netflix and TiVo services, as well as have a broadband Internet connection. The news comes eight months after TiVo acquired Strangeberry, a developer of broadband television software. Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, said that he believes his company will do moist of its business over the Internet by year's end. "We named the company Netflix, we didn't name it DVD by Mail," Hastings told Newsweek. Shares of both companies were up sharply in Tuesday's late trading.

o "Drink or Die" Piracy Ring Suspect Faces Extradition From Australia

Melbourne -- The alleged leader of "Drink or Die," an Internet piracy ring targeted by the U.S. Justice Dept., will now likely face extradition from Australia to the U.S., after an Australian appeals court overturned a lower court's ruling denying extradition rights, the New Zealand Herald reported. Hew Raymond Griffiths is an Australian resident but was indicted on two counts of federal copyright infringement in Virginia last year as part of the Justice Dept.'s crackdown on Drink or Die, which has resulted thus far in eleven convictions in the U.S. The group is credited with releasing a pirated version of Microsoft's Windows 95 on the Internet, along with thousands of pirated movies, songs, games and software programs. If convicted on the U.S. charges, Griffiths would face up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.

o European Online Music Sales to Grow to $4.2 Billion by 2009

Brussels -- The latest study by market analysis firm Forrester Research estimates that, by 2009, the sale of songs over the Internet in Western Europe will grow to 3.5 billion euro ($4.2 billion) a year. "The paid-for music downloading market in Western Europe has been languishing behind the U.S., until now," Forrester said. "The market will finally take off in 2004." France, Germany and the U.K. will still command the lion's share of the market, with more than 60% of the total number of legal downloads in Europe being sold in these three countries alone. The markets in Spain and Italy, however, will grow considerably, accounting for approximately 20% of the overall market by 2009, Forrester predicted.

Scottsdale, Ariz. -- Mobile gaming services in the U.S. will generate $1.8 billion annually by 2009, or about 44% of total wireless data revenues, when 78.6 million American wireless subscribers will play mobile games, according to a report from Arizona-based market research firm In-Stat/MDR. Downloads of games for cell phones are expected to increase more than tenfold from 2003 levels by 2009. The most popular wireless games include single-player board, puzzle and word games. "Mobile gaming has come a long way since 'Snake' was first deployed on wireless handsets in 1997," said In-Stat/MDR director of wireless research Clint Wheelock.
