o News Corp Acquires Web Video Game
Network IGN for $650 Million
New York -- Adding to a recent string of online acquisitions,
Aussie media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation announced on
Thursday that its Fox Interactive Media unit has acquired IGN
Entertainment, a video game news and information network, for $650
million in cash. San Francisco-based IGN claims 28 million users for
its network of video game and other entertainment-related sites,
which includes IGN.com, Rotten Tomatoes, AskMen.com, GameSpy and
FilePlanet. The newly formed Fox Interactive Media also recently
acquired social networking site MySpace.com parent Intermix for $580
million, and online sports news provider Scout Media for an
undisclosed sum; News Corp. has also been rumored to be in talks to
acquire Internet video search index Blinkx. News Corp. said the IGN
buy will increase its U.S. Web traffic to 70 million unique monthly
users, making it the fifth most-trafficked presence on the Web, and
fourth-largest in terms of monthly page impressions.

o Geico, Google
Settle Over Use of Trademarks in Sponsored Ads
San Francisco -- Auto insurance firm Geico announced that it has
settled a lawsuit it brought against Google, over the use of its
trademarks on Google's search engine advertising network, Reuters
reported. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. A federal
judge ruled in August that Google did not infringe Geico's
trademarks by selling keywords like "Geico" to third-party
advertisers on its search ad service, but added, however, that the
actual sponsored ads that advertisers themselves created and placed
on the service might have infringed Geico trademarks. Judge Leonie
Brinkema of the U.S. District Court in Virginia encouraged the two
parties to negotiate a settlement on the latter issue, which was
reached yesterday. Geico settled a similar trademark suit it brought
against Google search ad rival Overture Services -- now a part of
Yahoo -- in December. While these settlements fail to resolve the
legality of the issue in the U.S., Google has lost two similar
trademark suits related to its sponsored ads in France.

o Sony Plans
New Digital Walkman Players to Counter iPod
Tokyo -- On the same day rival Apple released a new iPod nano and
an iTunes cell phone, Sony announced plans to expand its line of
hard disk and flash memory-based digital music players later this
year, Reuters reported. "Our previous models have been well accepted
by customers in Japan and the United Kingdom. But we are not at all
satisfied with where we are now," said Sony Connect co-president
Koichiro Tsujino. "I understand a certain company made an
announcement earlier today. We will accelerate our challenge with
these new models." Sony will introduce 20GB (about $315 in Japan)
and 6GB hard disk-based Walkman models, in addition to three new
flash memory-based players. The new players will launch in Japan on
Nov. 19, and are expected to ship to foreign markets including the
U.S. by the end of the year.

o MTV,
Jamster to Study Mobile Entertainment Market
London -- Viacom's MTV Networks International announced on
Thursday that it is teaming with Jamster, its mobile entertainment
distribution partner and a unit of VeriSign, to study the usage,
mechanics and frequency of downloading and streaming entertainment
content to mobile phones. The study will also examine consumers'
increasing reliance on mobile devices, and their impact on content
creation and communication. The companies said that more than $8
billion was spent in the mobile content services market last year.
"This new study in collaboration with our mobile content partner,
Jamster and Jamba, will enable us to understand how the role of
mobile content is evolving around the world and how we can develop
compelling, new entertainment that is even more relevant to
consumers," said Graham Saxton, senior vice president of MTV
Networks International.

o Texas
Instruments Introduces Digital Video Chip for Consumer Devices
New York -- In a bid to repeat its success in the cell phone
market, for which it provides 60% of all chips, Texas Instruments on
Thursday introduced a new all-in-one chip for digital video, which
it claims will allow manufacturers to more efficiently release more
advanced camcorders and other video products. The "Da Vinci"
technology will enable color correction directly on a camcorder,
instead of on a computer, in addition to allowing a single set-top
box to provide playback, recording, video conferencing and home
surveillance video. TI said it expects to provide Da Vinci-based
processor samples, software and development tools by the end of
2005.

o MTV Films
Acquires Rights to Midway Games' "The Suffering"
New York -- MTV Films announced on Thursday that it has acquired
the film rights to "The Suffering," an action-horror video game from
Surreal Software, a unit of publisher Midway Games. Released in
April 2004, "The Suffering" features a man on death row in an island
prison that is invaded by monsters he must battle to escape; a
sequel, "The Suffering: Ties That Bind," is scheduled for release
this month. MTV Films is working in conjunction with Stan Winston
Productions ("Alien," "Predator," "Terminator") and Circle of

o Study:
E-mail, Weather, Search Sites Preferred by Mobile Users
San Francisco -- E-mail, weather and search web sites are the
most popular among consumers logging online through their mobile
phones, according to a new study by San Francisco-based Telephia.
The company said that 4.8% of the 191 million U.S. wireless users
accessed web email sites in June. Weather0related sites (3.9%) and
search sites (2.9) weren't far behind, followed by sites featuring
sports and news and politics. The most popular sites among mobile
users included The Weather Channel, Yahoo Mail, MSN Hotmail, Google
Search and ESPN. "For people on the go, accessing the Internet
through their mobile devices is an extension of their Internet use
on their PC," said Kanishka Agarwal, Telephia's vice president of
new products. "It is not surprising top mobile Internet categories
mirror Internet content categories accessed via a computer."
