o Second Online Gambling Executive
Arrested by U.S. Authorities
New York - U.S. authorities have arrested an executive
from another overseas online gambling company, this time targeting
the chairman of U.K.-based Sportingbet, Peter Dicks, Reuters
reported. Dicks was arrested in New York on Thursday and charged
with using a computer to gamble, as part of an investigation by
authorities in Louisiana. David Carruthers, the CEO of Costa
Rica-based gambling site BetOnSports, was arrested while traveling
in Texas in July, and indicted on racketeering charges. Reuters said
the second arrest of an online gambling executive by U.S.
authorities prompted share prices of companies in the sector to lose
over $1.5 billion in market value on Thursday. Sportingbet's Dicks
was released on $50,000 bail on Friday, and will appear in court in
New York on Sept. 14 to face extradition to Louisiana.

FTC Fines Social Network Xanga $1 Million for Underage User Accounts
Washington - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced
this week that social networking site Xanga.com will pay the largest
civil penalty levied thus far -- $1 million -- for allegedly
violating the Children's Online Privacy Act. The company is alleged
to have allowed some 1.7 million accounts over the past five years
to be created by persons whose stated age was younger than 13. The
FTC said Xanga disclosed personal information about the members
without first notifying and obtaining consent from parents, in
violation of the law. For its part, New York-based Xanga argued that
some of the "underage" accounts were created using a pet's birthday,
a couple's wedding date, or a religious person's "born again" date.
"[The law] requires all commercial websites, including operators of
social networking sites like Xanga, to give parents notice and
obtain their consent before collecting personal information from
kids they know are under 13," said FTC chairman Deborah Platt
Majoras. "A million-dollar penalty should make that obligation
crystal clear."

Facebook Alters New Social Network Features After Member Outcry
Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook, the second-largest online
social network with 9.5 million members, made alterations to new
features on the service late Thursday, after more than 600,000
members complained via online petitions. On Tuesday, Facebook
introduced a feature called "News Feed" that automatically notified
all of a member's friends each time new pictures were added, blog
comments posted -- even when a user's relationship status changed.
An outcry ensued, from members who deemed the new feature an
invasion of privacy. The company on Thursday added the ability to
opt out of the News Feed feature entirely, and also to control which
profile updates would be visible on friends' pages. "We really
messed this one up," Facebook chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote
in a blog post on Friday. "We did a bad job of explaining what the
new features were and an even worse job of giving you control of
them." The post went on to say the company has been "coding nonstop
for two days" to make changes to the News Feed feature that reflect
member concerns. "We're making changes because we feel it's
important to react to this quickly," Zuckerberg told The Washington
Post. "But we think it's a good product, and we're not taking it
down."

Yahoo to Webcast Live NFL Games
Outside North America
Santa Monica, Calif. - Yahoo announced on Friday that it
has signed an agreement with the National Football League (NFL) for
the rights to stream every NFL game live outside of North America.
The NFL Game Pass service from Yahoo Sports will charge fans $24.99
per week or $249 for the entire 17-week NFL regular season, with
each game to be available on-demand for up to 24 hours following its
conclusion. Yahoo said it will stream the games to computers at up
to 700 kbps.

Met to Beam Operas to Movie
Theaters, Internet, Satellite Radio
New York - New York's Metropolitan Opera this week
announced plans to broadcast live performances to movie theaters and
stream them over the Internet and satellite radio services. Six Met
performances from the upcoming season will be beamed live in
high-definition audio and video to movie theaters in the U.S.
(National CineMedia), Canada (Cineplex Entertainment) and Europe
(Odeon/UCI). They include productions of "The Magic Flute," "I
Puritani," "The First Emperor," "Eugene Onegin," "The Barber of
Seville" and "Il Trittico." In addition to the live broadcasts, more
than 1,500 historic radio broadcasts from the past 75 years will
also be offered online through RealNetworks' Rhapsody digital music
service. The organization did not name a satellite radio partner,
but said it also plans to expand distribution into digital
downloading, video-on-demand, instant CDs and ringtones. The Met
said the distribution deals were made possible through agreements
between the opera and its unions that eschew substantial upfront
payments in favor of a revenue-sharing model with more inclusive
distribution rights, bypassing traditional channels such as record
labels.

Red Sox's Curt Schilling, Todd
McFarlane Launch Game Studio
Maynard, Mass. - Curt Schilling, the Boston Red Sox
pitcher, on Friday announced he has founded a new multiplayer game
development studio with Todd McFarlane, the comic book writer and
creator of the "Spawn" franchise, and fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore.
The new company, called Green Monster Games, is now in
pre-production on its first title and is currently looking for
employees at its Maynard, Massachusetts offices. "Publishing great
games has more to do with the people you have on board than it does
with the cash and ideas you bring to the table," said Schilling.
"With that in mind, I conceived a plan years ago in which I
envisioned a 'dream team' of talent. At the top of my list were Todd
McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore, and it's a dream come true that they
have agreed to join Green Monster Games in the production of our
first title."

Wired News: Algorithm Changes at
Digg Anger Heavy Users
San Francisco - Wired News
on Friday reported on recent changes
made to the algorithms that
determine which news stories are
most popular on the news aggregation
site Digg.com. The changes were made
to help prevent fraud or abuse by
groups of users who team together to
game the site. Digg's
highest-ranking user has abandoned
the community in protest. "I
bequeath my measly No. 1 position to
whoever wants to reign," wrote Digg
user "P9." "Now YOU can spend all
the time, all the effort and get
stabbed in the back by fellow
Diggers (aptly named)." Digg founder
Kevin Rose wrote on the site's blog
that the changes were made so that
"users that follow a gaming pattern
will have less promotion weight.
This doesn't mean that the story
won't be promoted, it just means
that a more diverse pool of
individuals will be need to deem the
story homepage-worthy."
