o Report: U.S. Game Sales Up 17.5% in August; "Madden" Dominates

Port Washington, N.Y. - In a continuation of a recent upward trend that could mark the end of the "console transition," U.S. video game sales again rose 17.5% in August, to $397 million, according to sales data compiled by market research firm NPD Group. The most popular game at retail for the month across all consoles was, not surprisingly, Electronic Arts' newly released "Madden NFL 07." Sales of video games for current-generation consoles were $249 million -- a decline of $56 million -- while sales of games for next-generation consoles and handheld devices totaled $140 million. Sales of games for Microsoft's Xbox 360 were $89 million for the month; the company has now sold a total of 2.4 million Xbox 360 consoles in the U.S. "We think that this month's sales figures mark an end to the downward trend that started in front of the Xbox 360 launch last November," Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter wrote in a research note. "While it is too early to call an 'end' to the console transition, the sales strength over the last few months suggests to us that consumers are far less concerned about the transition than they have been in prior console cycles."

Paris - Infogrames, the struggling France-based parent company of video game publisher Atari, announced that its shares have been suspended from trading in Paris, "in anticipation of a press release announcing the company's debt restructuring plan," the company said. Infogrames recently reported that quarterly sales in the U.S. were down 20%. Atari also recently announced that its shares are in danger of being delisted from the Nasdaq, for failing to meet the minimum $1 bid price requirement. Last week, Atari appointed a new CEO, David Pierce, who was previously an executive at several U.S. studios and record labels.

o Motorola and Nokia to Collaborate on Mobile TV Interoperability

Amsterdam - Illinois-based Motorola and Finland's Nokia announced on Monday that they will collaborate on creating interoperability among their mobile devices and networks that support mobile TV and the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld) standard. The partnership between the cell phone makers will benefit wireless carriers interested in deploying multi-vendor mobile TV services and trials, beginning yet this year. "Operators around the world are evaluating broadcast mobile TV as a compelling new service to offer their subscribers -- and interoperability will play a key role in bringing these services to market faster," said Rob Bero, director of broadcast technologies at Motorola. The companies will also work on interoperability efforts using the open DVB-IPDC standard, while continuing to participate in industry-wide interoperability efforts within the related standardization bodies.

o Report: Mobile TV Audience Rose 45% to 3.7 Million in Q2 2006

San Francisco - The mobile TV audience grew 45% to 3.7 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2006, with revenues up 67% over the first quarter, to $86 million, according to a report from market research firm Telephia. ABC News was the most-watched mobile TV channel during the second quarter, with 40% of the total audience, followed by The Weather Channel (32%); Fox Sports (31%); and ESPN (29%). In terms of access reach -- or, the percent of total audience with access to a channel who actually tuned in -- CNN led overall by reaching 65% of users with access to its mobile channel. The Weather Channel was found to have the widest distribution for its channel, which is now available to 82% of mobile TV viewers. "While still in its nascent stages, mobile TV shows significant and unique promise given the ability of the consumer to shift viewing from location to location," said Telephia's Tamara Gaffney. "As seen with ABC News, Fox Sports and The Weather Channel, securing the widest distribution and coverage remains a primary objective."

o Report: European Mobile Entertainment Market to Hit $29.6 Billion in 2011

Cambridge, England - Music, browsing and video services are projected to propel the Western European mobile entertainment market at a compound annual growth rate of 29.2%, from $6.2 billion in 2005 to $29.7 billion in 2011, according to a report from market research firm Analysys. In particular, mobile music is expected to see tremendous growth in the region, with revenues rising more than 75% per year to reach $4.3 billion by 2011. The firm credits increased handset storage capacity and 3G adoption, which will also spur streamed mobile video services. However, Analysys said that operators will struggle to recoup their initial infrastructure and spectrum costs for mobile TV networks. "Until TV reception chips are embedded in the majority of handsets, there will be virtually no revenue from casual viewers," said report author Dr. Windsor Holden. "At the outset, content will only be accessible to that small core of users who are prepared to purchase specialized devices and pay a significant premium for them."

o Report: Rap/Hip-Hop Most Popular Ringtones; Women Lead All Downloads

Port Washington, N.Y. - The U.S. ringtone market is currently led by the rap/hip-hop genre, which accounted for 23% of all ringtone downloads in July, a month during which women downloaded 53% of all ringtones, according to a report from NPD Group. The next most-popular musical ringtone genres for the month were rock (17%), pop (11%) and alternative (8%). The report also found that younger consumers were more likely to download ringtones, as 26% were 13-17 and 22% were 18-24. "While price plays a role in the decision whether to download, it's only a small part of the mix," said NPD Group's Neil Strother. "Since younger consumers often choose clothing and other external accoutrements to help define who they are, ringtones are just another way of making a personal -- and audible -- mark on their environment."
