o Sony Acquires MGM for $5 Billion
After Time Warner Withdraws Bid
New York -- Sony announced on Monday that it has agreed, along
with partners including cable TV firm Comcast, to acquire movie
studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for about $5 billion. Sony and partners
will pay $12 a share for MGM, and assume $2 billion in debt, sources
close to the deal told Reuters. The announcement came just hours
after Time Warner said that it had withdrawn its rival bid for MGM.
"Although MGM is a valuable asset, we have decided to withdraw our
bid," said Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons. "Unfortunately, Time Warner
could not reach agreement with MGM at a price that would have
represented a prudent use of our growing financial capacity." MGM
holds a library of 4,000 films, including the James Bond and Rocky
franchises, and also operates a movie studio with films currently in
production.

o Report: 2003
Global Music Sales Fall 7.6% in Fourth Consecutive Decline
Brussels -- Sales of recorded music worldwide fell 7.6% in 2003,
the fourth consecutive year in decline, according to data from the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Total
sales were 2.7 billion units valued at $32 billion, down $6.2
billion from 1999 totals. The IFPI cited CD burning and illegal
music downloading as the primary reason for the decline, coupled
with competition from other forms of entertainment -- like video
games and DVDs -- and economic uncertainty in Latin America and
Asia. Universal was once again the top-selling record label,
although its market share fell from 25.4% in 2002 to 23.5% last
year; EMI leapfrogged Sony to become the number two label, with
13.4% of market share; while Sony claimed 13.2%, and Warner 12.7%.
Bertelsmann, whose merger with Sony recently won antitrust approval,
accounted for 11.9% of the world market.

o Telecom
Italia and Microsoft Enter Internet TV Partnership
Milan -- Telecom Italia announced on Monday that it has forged a
partnership with Microsoft to begin testing the software giant's
Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) software. Once completed, IPTV
will allow telephone companies to offer TV-related subscriber
services through two-way broadband networks, which in turn will
enable TVs to be equipped with video-on-demand, interactive
programming guides with video and multiple picture-in-picture
capabilities, the companies said. With the news, Telecom Italia
joins Bell Canada, Reliance Infocomm Ltd., SBC Communications Inc.
and Swisscom/Bluewin, which are also working with the Microsoft IPTV
platform.

o Traffic to
Bush, Kerry Sites Gets Boost from Conventions
Washington -- President Bush got an online boost from the recent
Republican National Convention, but not nearly as much of one as
John Kerry during the Democratic National Convention, according to
new figures from Nielsen/NetRatings, a provider of Internet audience
measurement services. The RNC boosted at-home traffic to the Bush-
Cheney web site by 50%, as compared to a 191% jump to the Kerry
site, the firm said. The DNC helped Kerry's site climb to its
highest number of weekly home visitors (771,000) during his
campaign, while Bush's site attracted 438,000 unique visitors during
the start of the RNC. "This is the first presidential election where
the Internet is being leveraged effectively," said Heather
Dougherty, a senior analyst for Nielsen/NetRatings. "We've seen both
candidates use the Internet to communicate their platforms to
voters, rally their audience, and on the side, poke fun at each
other via interactive clips that people can forward via emails."
