o Michigan Passes Violent Game Sales Ban; Game Industry to Sue Governor

Washington -- The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a video game industry trade group, announced on Wednesday that it will sue Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, asking a court to overturn a ban on the sale of violent video games to minors in the state she signed into law today. "Protecting our children must be everyone's top priority," Granholm said. "This is a common-sense law that provides parents with the tools they need to protect their children from the effects of violence and graphic adult content." Calling the language of the bill -- which will become Michigan state law on Dec. 1 -- "hopelessly vague," the ESA pointed out that similar bans have been struck down by the courts in St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Washington State. "If this law is implemented, it will not only limit First Amendment rights for Michigan's residents, but, by virtue of its vagueness, it will also create a huge amount of confusion for Michigan's retailers, parents, and video game developers," said ESA president Douglas Lowenstein.

o Report: European Mobile Music Downloads to Hit $1.8 Billion in 2010

London -- Europeans are forecasted to spend $640 million downloading full-track songs to their mobile phones in 2010, and an additional $1.2 billion on master recording ringtones, according to a report from London-based market research firm Generator. The combined $1.8 billion will account for 15% of total European music sales in 2010, up from a market share of 3.4% in 2005. "Music fans will soon be able to buy music phones that are as good as many digital music players and they will be able to use their phones to buy songs and enjoy music services provided by familiar music and mobile brands," said Generator research director Andrew Sheehy. When revenues from full-track mobile downloads, master recording ringtones and all other online music services are combined, they are expected to account for 39% of European music industry sales by 2010, up from 4.4% in 2005.

o Associated Press to Launch Youth-Targeted Multimedia News Service

New York -- The Associated Press plans next week to launch "asap," a multimedia news service targeted at an 18 to 34-year-old audience that will combine audio, video, blogs and wireless text, The New York Times reported on Wednesday. Over 100 newspapers have signed up for the service, with some integrating free asap content onto their websites and others also adding content to their print editions. A staff of 20 A.P. journalists will generate original material for the service, which will also include personal essays and other content from the wire service's staff around the world. "We have that existing cadre of correspondents and local hires in many bureaus who have things to say and stories to tell," Ted Anthony, the editor of asap, told The Times, adding, "…some of what resonates the most with this audience is not necessarily traditional journalism."
