o Nintendo Sets $249 Price, Nov.
19 Launch Date for Wii Console
New York - Nintendo announced on Thursday that its
next-generation Wii video game console will sell for $249 when it
launches in North America on Nov. 19. The console will come with one
wireless Wii Remote controller, one "Nunchuk" controller and a
collection of five Wii Sports games on one disc. Nintendo also
announced that its own Wii game titles will retail for $49.99, with
a total of 30 game titles slated for release by the end of the year,
including "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" and "Excite
Truck." The console will also play over 530 titles developed for the
Nintendo GameCube. The Wii will feature a series of on-screen
"channels" on the Wii Channel Menu. The menu will provide links to
news and weather information, and also let users view and send
photos, as well as create playable caricatures of themselves to
insert into game titles. Additional functions will allow users to
redeem Wii Points, and download classic games to the Wii Virtual
Console. "Wii reinvents games for the devoted player," says Nintendo
of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "But more importantly, Wii
breaks the wall separating players from non-players by delivering
the best game experiences for the most affordable price. We believe
the next leap is games for the masses -- young and old, gamer or
non, alone, with a friend or with the whole family."

Microsoft Details Wi-Fi Capabilities, Accessories for Zune Player
Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft on Thursday provided additional
information about its forthcoming Zune digital media player and
content marketplace, including details on the wireless capabilities
of the 30GB player. The Zune player will allow users to share
full-length sample tracks of select songs, homemade recordings,
playlists or pictures over a Wi-Fi connection. Any track may be
listened to up to three times over three days, after which time it
becomes unplayable, although users may flag shared songs on their
Zune at any point for purchase from the Zune Marketplace, which will
offer both a la carte and subscription options. Microsoft added that
the Zune will feature a built-in FM tuner, and come pre-loaded with
content from labels including DTS, EMI Music's Astralwerks Records
and Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music
Group, Sub Pop Records and V2/Artemis Records. Microsoft also
introduced three accessory packs for the Zune, including a Home A/V
Pack that will include an A/V output cable for connecting the Zune
to a television or home stereo. Microsoft said accessory makers
including Altec Lansing, Belkin, Griffin Technology, Harman Kardon,
Klipsh and Logitech are developing products for the Zune. "With Zune,
we are not simply delivering a portable device, we are introducing a
new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and
helps people find new music and develop new social connections,"
said J Allard, Microsoft's vice president of design and development.

Justice Dept. Urges Foreign Nations Not to Impose Regulations on
Apple
Washington - U.S. Justice Department antitrust chief
Thomas Barnett has urged foreign governments not to impose
regulations on technologies that could hamper innovation, citing as
example Apple's dealings with foreign nations with regard to its
iTunes store, Reuters reported. Barnett did not specifically mention
the new laws and threats of litigation against Apple that France and
several Scandinavian nations have undertaken in response to Apple's
refusal to open its iTunes store to iPod competitors. In contrast to
those countries' contentions that Apple is creating a monopoly on
digital music, with its iTunes Store tied to its iPod players,
Barnett said such actions "provide a useful illustration of how an
attack on intellectual property rights can threaten dynamic
innovation." Some antitrust lawyers in the audience at Barnett's
speech at an antitrust law conference told Reuters he may also be
referring to Microsoft, on whom the European Commission has imposed
sanctions for violating antitrust laws.
