o U.K. Consumers' Association Calls
for Probe into iTunes Pricing
London -- The U.K. Consumers' Association on Wednesday called on
the Office of Fair Trading to open an investigation into the pricing
of Apple's music download service iTunes. According to the
Consumers' Association, iTunes is "ripping off" U.K. customers and
possibly breaching EU competition rules by charging 120 euro cents
for each track downloaded -- about 21 cents more than it costs to
download a track in France or Germany. Apple defended its pricing
scheme, comparing the situation with divergent prices for CDs in the
U.S. and the U.K. The company said that prices should be compared
with other music download services in the U.K., not on the
Continent. "The underlying economic model in each country has an
impact on how we price our track downloads," an Apple spokesperson
said. "We believe the real comparison to be made is with the price
of other track downloads in the U.K."

o Report:
Beatles' Record Label May Get Landmark Settlement from Apple
London -- Apple Computer may face the largest out of court
settlement in history, if a U.K. court decides it broke an agreement
with the Beatles' Apple Corps record label that restricted the
company from entering the music market, according to published
reports citing legal experts. In 1981, Apple Computer and Apple
Corps brokered a deal that allowed the computer firm to use its name
and not infringe on the label's trademark so long as it did not sell
music. Apple Computer was then sued by Apple Corps in 1989,
following the release of music-editing software, and settled that
suit in 1991 for a reported $30 million. With the launch of iTunes
and its iPod, Apple was sued again in Sept. 2003, and legal experts
have said that Apple Computer may have to pay what could amount to
the largest out of court settlement in history in the case, outside
of class action litigation.

o Website Leak
Claims New Nintendo DS Handheld Will Retail for $200
Tokyo -- Thanks to a leak on Wal-Mart's website reported by
various publications, Nintendo may be planning to launch its new DS
dual-screened handheld video game console in the U.S. on Nov. 30
with a price tag of $199.82. The price comes from a pre-order page
posted on Wal-Mart.com; Nintendo has not confirmed either the launch
date or price point for the DS, which will compete with rival Sony's
new handheld, the PSP.

o Amazon.com
Unit A9 Launches Internet Search Engine
Seattle -- Online retailer Amazon.com on Wednesday announced that
its A9.com subsidiary has officially launched its Internet search
engine that allows users to store and organize their search results.
A9.com offers search results culled from a range of sources,
including Google, Amazon.com's book text search service, the
Internet Movie Database and GuruNet.com. Users must register on the
site to be able to store their search results. Amazon's A9 launches
just as partner and rival Google made its IPO, and Microsoft is set
to debut its own search engine technology. "A9.com gives people an
incredible amount of power to discover information from diverse and
comprehensive data sources and to manage that information
effectively and easily," said Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.
"The search landscape is evolving at such a rapid pace that we must
continue working hard to build innovative technologies that offer a
great user experience."

a list of the files stored on their cluster, to increase efficiency
on the network.
