New York - News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch is in talks with Liberty Media chairman John Malone, on swapping News Corp.'s estimated $9 billion, 38% stake in U.S. satellite TV provider DirecTV for Liberty's 20% holding in News Corporation, Reuters reported. The initial story from CNBC stated that Murdoch has soured on the U.S. satellite TV business, partly due to his inability to offer high-speed Internet without partnering with the telephone companies.

o Ted Leonsis To Step Down From Management Role At AOL

Dulles, Va. - Ted Leonsis, the vice chairman of AOL and president of its Audience business, announced that he will retire from a management role at the company on January 1. Leonsis will remain vice chairman of the company, after stepping down from day-to-day management roles. Leonsis joined AOL in 1993, following the acquisition of Redgate Communications, one of the first new media marketing companies. "I love AOL, and I am so proud of what we've done," said Leonsis. "But I have other interests calling out to me, and I felt the time was right to pursue them -- my sports teams, my film-making activities, my philanthropic interests, and new entrepreneurial efforts -- even as I continue in a new role at AOL." He is a majority owner of the NHL's Washington Capitals, and the WNBA's Washington Mystics. He is also a minority shareholder in the Washington Wizards, the Verizon Center, and in the D.C. Ticketmaster franchise. Through the Leonsis Foundation, he is active in Hoop Dreams, Best Buddies, YouthAIDS, See Forever Foundation, and Venture Philanthropy Partners.

o Taiwan Song-Swapping Service Kuro Agrees to Shut Down, Pay Damages

London - The recording industry's campaign against illicit file-sharing sites claimed another victory this week, as Taiwan-based Kuro agreed to shut down and pay the industry unspecified damages for copyright infringement. Kuro, which counted an estimated 500,000 registered users for its commercial, subscription-based download service, announced plans to re-launch as a legitimate service that will compensate copyright holders. "Unauthorized file-sharing services like Kuro profit from large-scale copyright infringement and undermine those legitimate online music services who pay artists and respect copyright," said Geoff Taylor, EVP and general counsel for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), a record label trade group. "This settlement confirms that there is a bright future for legal online music services, while services that try to build a business on copyright theft pay a heavy price." The civil settlement with Kuro follows a landmark file-sharing case in Taiwan last year, where executives at Kuro parent company Fashionow were convicted on criminal charges in a case brought by the IFPI.

The experimental ad for FX's new drama series, "Brotherhood," will consist of a single image displayed for the duration of the 30-second commercial, which the company says will ensure an impression even if the ad is fast-forwarded at 12x speeds. o Report: Global 3G Subscribers to Reach 1 Billion by 2010

Boston - Subscribers to 3G mobile network services are on target to reach 167 million worldwide by the end of the year, and will climb pass the 1 billion mark in 2010, according to a report from market research firm Strategy Analytics. The firm also predicts that 3G subscribers will account for more than half of all cellular service revenues by 2010, despite making up just one-third of the total projected wireless user market of 3 billion people. "Having passed the 100 million subscriber mark in early June 2006, the 3G market will now enjoy a period of sustained growth," said Phil Kendall, director of Strategy Analytics' global wireless practice. "Verizon Wireless is driving a real surge in 3G demand in the US, while China and India will start 3G services next year. With Indonesian 3G services already live, and more of the world's major population centers, such as Brazil, Pakistan and Russia, coming online later in the decade, by 2009, we will see more than one quarter of a billion subscribers being added to 3G networks each year."
