o U.K.-Based BTG Sues Amazon.com for Patent Infringement

London -- BTG, a technology development firm based in London, announced that it is suing Amazon.com, the Internet retail giant, for using an Internet tracking technology for which it claims to own a patent. The company said it has also filed lawsuits in a court in Delaware against online bookseller BarnesandNoble.com, discount retailer Overstock.com and DVD rental website Netflix. BTG claims the technology in question was developed by Infonautics Corp, whose patents BTG acquired two years ago. BTG also said that it was seeking unspecified damages for past infringements, as well as an injunction against future use of the technology. Formerly known as British Technology Group, BTG is a company that takes technology from universities and companies and tries to commercialize it.

o Report: Sony to Launch $149 Restyled "PStwo" Console on Oct. 26

Los Angeles -- Sony may be set to release a restyled version of its top-selling PlayStation 2 console next month, which will be 30% smaller than its predecessor, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. The "PStwo" would be similar to the smaller version of the original PlayStation, the PSone, which Sony still sells for $49 and for which developers including Electronic Arts and Atari continue to create games. THR cited analysts and game retailers who noted that the PStwo may go on sale on Oct. 26, the same date that Rockstar Games' anticipated "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" title has been rescheduled for release. Sony has not commented on reports about the PStwo, but sources said the console will sell for $149.

o Appeals Court Invalidates Trade Body Decision on Gemstar Patent Suits

Los Angeles -- Gemstar-TV Guide International, a provider of electronic program guides for digital television services, announced on Thursday that a U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in its favor, in agreeing that the International Trade Commission (ITC) incorrectly dismissed certain of Gemstar's patent infringement claims against seven technology firms. Los Angeles-based Gemstar sued companies including satellite TV firm EchoStar and set-top box makers Pioneer and Scientific-Atlanta, for importing set-tops into the U.S. that included interactive program guides that Gemstar believes infringe on its patents. The company took the matter with the up ITC, which dismissed several of Gemstar's patent claims; Gemstar then appealed that decision to the federal court that ruled in its favor today. "Today's ruling is consistent with the company's argument that the ITC incorrectly dismissed certain of the company's infringement claims based on narrow interpretation of the patents in suit," Gemstar said, in a statement.

o Chipmaker Infineon Admits to Price Fixing, Agrees to Pay $160 Million

Frankfurt -- Infineon Technologies AG, one of the world's largest semiconductor firms, has admitted to price fixing and agreed to pay a fine of $160 million. In a statement filed with the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, the German firm admitted to conspiring with other companies to drive up prices for "dynamic random access memory" products used in digital recorders, PCs, printers, video recorders, mobile phones and other devices. Under the terms of the agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, Infineon must plead guilty to one felony count of price fixing and cooperate with an investigation of other producers of computer memory products. "This case sends the message that high-tech price-fixing cartels will not be tolerated -- a message reinforced by the largest criminal fine levied in a Department of Justice case in the past three years," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "We are committed to pursuing illegal price-fixing cartels that harm American consumers, regardless of whether they are at home or abroad." None of Infineon's co-conspirators has been named.
