o WSJ: Growing Ad Revenue a Key in
Potential Microsoft Deal for AOL
Dulles, Va. -- Looking to take aim at online ad giants Yahoo and
Google, Time Warner is in preliminary discussions to sell a
"substantial" stake of America Online to Microsoft, The Wall Street
Journal confirmed on Friday. People familiar with the matter told
the Journal that early talks have focused on whether AOL would
switch from Google's search engine to Microsoft's -- AOL and Google
reportedly shared $380 million in advertising revenue last year --
and also have included discussions about combining the ad sales
teams of AOL and Microsoft's MSN. Both AOL and Microsoft last year
generated well less than half the ad revenue of Google and Yahoo.
Sources told the Journal that investment bankers have not yet been
engaged.

o Nintendo
Unveils One-Handed Game Controller for Revolution Console
Tokyo -- Nintendo on Friday unveiled a new game controller design
for its forthcoming next-generation Revolution video game console,
which abandons the traditional two-hand design in favor of a model
held in one hand. The "freehand-style" controller, designed to
entice non-traditional gamers, features sensitive motion-detection
technology that allows players to control the action with wrist
motions, in addition to using traditional button, trigger and
directional-pad controls. There is also a "nunchuk" style analog
unit, one of a number of expansions for the freehand controller,
which can be used in tandem by the other hand for enhanced gameplay.
"The feeling is so natural and real, as soon as players use the
controller, their minds will spin with the possibilities of how this
will change gaming as we know it today," explains Satoru Iwata,
Nintendo president. "This is an extremely exciting innovation -- one
that will thrill current players and entice new ones." Nintendo told
Wired News that a modified version of its "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes"
title -- used during a demonstration of the controller at the Tokyo
Game Show -- took just a couple weeks to develop, adding that game
developers could easily modify standard game designs to incorporate
the new controller design.

o Senate
Shelves Legislation to Further Restrict Internet Gambling
Washington -- The U.S. Senate has shelved proposed legislation
that would have placed further restrictions on Internet gambling,
Reuters reported. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) had attempted to attach
language that would block banks and credit card providers from
letting customers open accounts on Internet gambling sites to an
annual Senate spending bill, but an unnamed Democrat objected and
the language was removed. "We will proceed with this; it will become
law at some point at some time," Kyl said on the Senate floor.
"There should be no reason why we can't move forward on this."
Similar restrictions have previously passed in both houses of
Congress, but the House and Senate have thus far been unable to
agree on identical bills.

o Record
Labels Sue Chinese Search Engine Baidu for Copyright Infringement
New York -- The world's four major record labels (EMI, Sony BMG,
Universal, Warner) have sued Baidu.com, China's most popular
Internet search engine, for copyright infringement, alleging the
site provides illegal links to free music downloads, Reuters
reported. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry
(IFPI) told Reuters three of the suits were filed in July in
Beijing, with Sony BMG filed its suit earlier this month. Baidu,
which saw its share price rise from $27 to $122 on the day of its
initial public offering on the Nasdaq in August, has since lost a
third of its market value -- blamed largely on the company's
overvaluation.

o Taiwan
File-Sharing Site Kuro, Principals Get Copyright Convictions
London -- The International Federation of the Phonographic
Industry (IFPI), a worldwide record label trade group, recently
announced that Kuro, a Taiwan-based Internet file-sharing service,
has been convicted of criminal copyright infringement. A fine of
$90,000 was imposed, and three Kuro principals received prison terms
of up to three years. A user convicted of uploading songs to the
service also received a four month prison sentence. "This is good
news for artists and the music industry, particularly in Taiwan
which has had a history of piracy problems," said Lauri Rechardt,
IFPI director of licensing and litigation. "Kuro has received a
criminal conviction which sends a strong message that profiteering
from infringement will not be tolerated." The IFPI has asked Kuro to
either filter copyrighted songs off its file-sharing service or else
shut down.

o U.K. Gambling
Site 888 Cuts Price Range for Upcoming IPO
London -- 888 Holdings sent shockwaves through the European
online gambling market this week after slashing the price range for
its imminent initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock
Exchange from more than $1.27 billion to a midpoint of about $1.14
billion. The new price range is about 10% lower than initial
estimates. Industry experts said 888 may have been hit by fears of
waning Internet gaming growth after rival PartyGaming announced last
week that new poker players were spending less than its traditional
core. 888 has tried to distance itself from PartyGaming's troubles
by insisting that it has seen no evidence of a downturn in online
gambling. Conditional dealings in 888 shares are scheduled to begin
later this month.

o MTV, Digital
Music Retailers Offer Hurricane Relief Concert Downloads
New York -- MTV Networks announced on Friday that it has
partnered with online music retailers MSN Music, RealNetworks'
Rhapsody, Sony Connect, Cdigix, FYE and Virgin Digital to sell
downloads of 26 live performances from the "ReAct Now: Music and
Relief" concert, held on Sept. 10. The companies said 100% of the
retail price of the songs will go to benefit the American Red Cross
and Habitat for Humanity's relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina.
Live performances from the concert offered will include U2's "Love &
Peace or Else," Neil Young's "Walking In New Orleans," Green Day's
"Wake Me Up When September Ends," Trent Reznor's "Hurt" and Beck's
"Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes." Most of the partner digital
retailers will require the download of certain software before the
songs may be purchased from their online stores.
