o Report: 1.82 Billion Videos Streamed So Far in 2002, Up 65% Over 2001

Seaside, Calif. -- During the first six months of 2002, the total number
of video streams served from entertainment, news and finance content sites
reached 1.82 billion, up 65 percent from the same period last year,
according to a report released on Tuesday by Seaside, Calif.-based media
research firm AccuStream IMedia Research. However, this growth is still
less than the 81.1 percent originally forecast at the beginning of the
year. AccuStream attributes the slower growth to the shifting of major
content and streaming brands like CNN.com, Fox, ABC and CNET to
subscription models, and a more measured approach to stream growth by
management to keep expenses in check. "The guarantee of both licensing and
a cut of subscription revenue, however, encouraged those major brands to
make more and better -- often exclusive -- content available, which has
attracted more subscribers to pay various services, and streams served
there are growing substantially," said AccuStream research director Paul
A. Palumbo. The total number of video streams accessed during 2002 is now
projected to reach 3.7 billion, with broadband streams expected to account
for 62.9 percent of this figure.

o Online Ad Firm DoubleClick Offers $12.9 Million for U.K.-Based Protagona

New York -- DoubleClick, a provider of Internet ad serving technology and
services, announced on Tuesday that it has submitted an offer of $12.9
million to acquire the assets of U.K.-based marketing automation software
firm Protagona. New York-based DoubleClick said the sale is conditional
on, among other things, the proposed acquisition by Protagona of
Swetenhams Marketing Services Limited not being approved by Protagona's
shareholders. If approved, DoubleClick will integrate Protagona's software
into its own offering and take over the company's 40 or so clients, which
include German media conglomerate Bertelsmann.

o IFPI Releases New Logo to Denote "Copy-Protected" Music CDs

London -- The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry
(IFPI), an international record label trade group similar to the RIAA,
announced on Tuesday the introduction of an optional logo that record
companies may place on CDs to inform consumers that the disc they are
purchasing is "copy-protected." Several of the record industry's attempts
to copy-protect discs have resulted in CDs that will not play in certain
computers or in devices that normally play CDs, such as DVD players or
video game consoles, angering some consumers. "Copy protection is a
logical response by the music industry to protect its product from mass
copying and digital piracy. The new, optional logo will be of practical
help to record companies and retailers in informing consumers that a CD
carries some form of copy control," said IFPI chairman and CEO Jay Berman.
A digital version of the logo, consisting of a triangle inside of a circle
and looking vaguely like the letter "C" or Pac-Man, is available at the
link below.

o Report: Consumers Using TV, Internet Simultaneously

Reston, Va. -- New statistics released on Tuesday by Virginia-based
ComScore Networks, a provider of statistical information on Internet use,
show that the lines between television and the Internet are continuing to
blur. The company revealed a study showing that 48 percent of Internet
users -- or about 45.1 million adults -- have a television and PC in the
same room, and nearly half of them said they frequently use the two
simultaneously. Calling the information a "wake-up call" for media
companies, Peter Daboll, division president of ComScore Media Metrix, said
that networks and advertisers now have more of an opportunity than ever to
deliver integrated programming and promotions. "Advertisers have to
understand that viewers are often dividing their attention between two
media," making the Internet an effective platform during commercial breaks
of boring shows, said Daboll. "TV programmers need to understand they are
competing against the Internet for viewers' attention."

o AOL to Launch Retooled Service for Broadband

Dulles, Va. -- Trying to lure its Internet customers to pricier high-speed
connections, Dulles-based America Online plans to roll out a retooled
version of its service specifically designed for broadband. The Wall
Street Journal reported that the service, to be introduced next month,
will include built-in media players that will allow users to view videos
and music, as well as more original content. AOL has been suffering from
stagnant subscriber growth in recent months, as many Internet users have
signed up with cable or DSL companies offering significantly higher
connection speeds. The company has 35 million subscribers -- but the vast
majority are on slower dial-up connections.

Boston-based DMOD's network to securely share uncompressed audio files via
the public Internet across seven cities on two continents during the

interactive TV game called "Sex Games." The game will be available to NTL

created games for a family audience," said Two Way TV commercial director

untapped demand for late night adult entertainment that's also a bit of
fun and educational."

(Tokyo) Reuters on Tuesday reported on the emerging market for online
games, citing analysts and industry players who predict that online
one-on-one games for consoles will initially be more successful than the
massively multiplayer games currently attracting millions of paying
subscribers. The article also cites data from Nomura Research Institute
estimating the Japanese online games market will grow from $285 million in
2001 to $2.2 billion in 2006.

(New York) The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday reported on controversy
surrounding a recent Budweiser online ad feature -- enabled by software
from San Francisco-based Pulse Entertainment -- that allows any user to
superimpose a digital rendering of their own face onto those of characters
in their popular commercials and email them to friends. "Young people are
among the most likely to want to use this type of technological wizardry
to impress their friends," George Hacker, director of the alcohol policies
practice for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told The
Journal. "There's obviously inadequate security against the use of this by
people who are underage."

video games, as evidenced by his composing of sound effects for Id
Software's popular title "Quake" and a soundtrack for its upcoming "Doom
