o Telecom Italia to Buy AOL Germany for $870 Million

Dulles, Va. - Continuing to shift AOL away from its traditional Internet access model, parent Time Warner said that it has agreed to sell its AOL Germany unit to Telecom Italia for $870 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in four to six months. AOL Germany has operated as an Internet service provider (ISP) for over 10 years, offering both narrowband and broadband Internet access. As of June, the company had 1.1 million broadband and 1.3 million dial-up subscribers. Dick Parsons, the chairman and CEO of Time Warner, said that the deal "advances AOL's worldwide transition from a business built primarily on providing Internet access to an advertising-supported business model." As part of the deal, AOL will provide co-branded audience services and content on a joint web portal for all of Telecom Italia's residential Internet access subscribers in Germany, and will handle all online advertising sales.

o Belgian Court Orders Google to Remove Articles from Google News

Brussels - Google has been ordered by a Belgian court to stop re-publishing articles from French-language newspapers on its Google News site in the country, Reuters reported. The Sept. 5 court ruling also set out a $1.3 million fine if Google did not comply by Monday; Reuters said links and summaries of Belgium's La Derniere Heure and Le Soir were still available from Google in Belgium on Monday. "We are asking for Google to pay and seek our authorization to use our content ... Google sells advertising and makes money on our content," Margaret Boribon, general secretary at Copiepress -- a licensing agency for Belgian publications -- told Reuters. The French newswire service Agence France Press sued Google on similar grounds last year, prompting the search giant to remove news articles from the organization from Google News.

o Justice Dept. Gets First BitTorrent-Related Piracy Conviction

Washington - The U.S. Justice Department recently announced its first conviction on criminal copyright infringement charges related to the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network. Scott R. McCausland, 24, of Erie, Pa. pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and one count of criminal copyright infringement in violation of the Family Entertainment Copyright Act. McCausland admitted to his involvement with Elite Torrents, a BitTorrent tracker site that the Justice Dept. said at its prime claimed 133,000 members and hosted 2 million copies of pirated works. McCausland provided Elite Torrents with its copy of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" six hours before it premiered in theaters -- a file that was downloaded more than 10,000 times in the following 24 hours. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania has scheduled a sentencing hearing for Dec. 12, where McCausland will face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
