o RIAA Files Copyright Suit Against
Apple-Based File-Sharing Service iMesh Washington -- The Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA), a trade group representing
the world's major record labels, announced on Friday that it has
filed a copyright infringement suit against iMesh, the Israel-based
provider of a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. The suit comes at
the same time as the RIAA's appeal of a ruling that said such
file-sharing services were not themselves guilty of copyright
infringement, instead placing the guilt on individual file-swappers.
IMesh operates on the same FastTrack network used by Kazaa and
Grokster, one of the firms that was absolved of copyright liability
in the ruling the RIAA is appealing. "IMesh's recent conduct and
public statements make clear that its goal is to encourage illegal
behavior. This action is timed to make clear that there is no free
pass for those who center their activity around, and profit from,
copyright infringement," RIAA president Cary Sherman said in a
statement.

o AOL Time
Warner Votes to Drop "AOL" from Corporate Name
Dulles, Va. -- Following weeks of speculation, the board of media
giant AOL Time Warner has voted to drop "AOL" from the company's
name. The company, which will be known simply as Time Warner Inc.
and have a new ticker symbol "TWX" on the New York Stock Exchange,
expects to fully implement the change in the next few weeks. Dick
Parsons, the company's chairman and CEO, said that the change "ends
any confusion between our corporate name and the America Online
brand name for our investors, partners and the public." There is
also conjecture that the company is trying to distance itself from
the recent troubles at America Online, which has been losing
subscribers to faster broadband connections and is under
investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The move
comes nearly three years after the $112 billion merger that created
AOL Time Warner.

o Scholars,
Executives Discuss Future of Digital Media At Harvard Conference
Cambridge, Mass. -- Nearly 100 digital media legal scholars,
executives and other experts gathered Thursday at Harvard Law School
to discuss possible future business models in the rapidly changing
arena of Internet-distributed entertainment. The conference was
organized by Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society and
analyst firm Gartner G2. Topics discussed included digital rights
management schemes, the Recording Industry Association of America's
(RIAA) recent filing of copyright infringement lawsuits against
individual music file-swappers, and how a compulsory licensing
program for the record industry -- which would essentially legalize
file-sharing while taxing it somehow to pay creators -- could be
implemented. "Today's digital rights management can easily become
tomorrow's political rights management," said Electronic Freedom
Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow. "The same system that we
are increasingly putting in place allowing the record industry to
survey your hard disk would allow the government to survey your hard
disk with a different purpose."
