o Hollywood Studios Invest $30 Million in Anti-Piracy Joint Venture

New York -- The six major Hollywood movie studios have formed a joint venture to develop new anti-piracy technologies, The New York Times reported on Monday. Motion Picture Laboratories (MovieLabs) will receive $30 million in financing over its first two years from the studios to develop various anti-piracy technologies not being addressed in the marketplace. Initiatives include developing a means of jamming camcorders smuggled into movie theaters; network management software to block movie-trading on campus and corporate computer networks; tools to detect illegal file-sharing on public networks; security for home networks; and technological methods of maintaining regional release windows worldwide. "Our highest priority is protecting the integrity of our product," Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), told The Times. The MPAA said it modeled its MovieLabs venture on the cable TV industry's CableLabs, which develops technologies cable TV providers needed and that consumer electronics firms were not addressing in the market.

o WSJ: Legal File-Sharing Firm Mashboxx in Talks to Acquire Grokster

New York -- The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Mashboxx, a major label-supported, legal file-sharing service, is currently in talks to acquire Grokster, one of the unauthorized peer-to-peer services found guilty of copyright infringement in a recent landmark Supreme Court ruling. The Journal did not report financial details of the transaction; however, it did say that Mashboxx may share in revenue generated by a legal version of Grokster with the company's owners -- who themselves are not readily identified. Mashboxx was founded by Wayne Rosso, who formerly served as president of Grokster while it was still a popular unauthorized file-sharing service. The legal Mashboxx service, which will feature songs cleared through Napster founder Shawn Fanning's new venture, Snocap, is scheduled to launch in the next several months.

Other companies leading the way will include Baidu, Interactive Data Corp., Greenfield Online and HealthStream, the firm said. Outsell expects the top performance in the industry to come in the search, aggregation and distribution segment, which is expected to grow its revenue 17% over the next three years. Of the eight segments covered, the most sluggish growth (3%) is forecast for the Yellow Pages segment.

Menlo Park, Calif. -- After a year-long beta test, Peerflix on Monday launched its online DVD trading service, which facilitates the trading of DVDs among members through the mail. The company charges 99 cents per trade, and enables users to print out their own DVD mailers; the U.S. Postal Service enables online tracking of lent DVD titles. Peerflix members currently offer a combined library of more than 65,000 DVD titles, with members registered in all 50 states and most Canadian provinces.

o Survey: More Internet Phone Customers Disconnecting Landlines

San Francisco -- Internet-based telephone services are slowly replacing traditional landline phone services, according to a new study by Telephia. Of households already subscribing to Internet telephony services, 53% of those considered "high-tech" -- subscribing to at least three emerging services such as satellite radio, video-on-demand and broadband -- have now disconnected their landline phones. Those surveyed identified savings on phone calls as the main factor in making the switch. "Cost savings and seamless integration of different communication services provide a compelling one-two punch for Internet telephony," said Kanishka Agarwal, the vice president of new products at Telephia. Of the households surveyed who have not yet disconnected their landlines, most cited their availability during a power outage as the main reason. More than a third also cited the importance of keeping their current phone numbers.
