o Apple CEO Calls Labels' Desire to
Increase Download Pricing "Greedy"
Paris -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday rebuffed record labels'
desire to increase the price for downloadable songs from iTunes and
other digital music stores, citing the need to keep prices where
they are so that consumers will still pay instead of turning to free
file-sharing services, Reuters reported. "If they want to raise the
prices, it means that they (record labels) are getting greedy," Jobs
said at a news conference in Paris. "If the price goes up, they
(consumers) will go back to piracy and everybody loses." Jobs also
cast doubt on mobile music downloads, a market eyed as potentially
lucrative by both record labels and wireless network operators. "It
is not clear that buying songs over the air makes economic sense,"
Jobs said. "I am skeptical because of the cost...but we will see."
Apple recently unveiled a music phone joint collaboration with
Motorola and Cingular, which allows users to transfer songs directly
from a PC, instead of purchasing them from wireless carriers for
download to phones. The company is also rumored to be developing a
completely Apple-designed mobile phone handset, which Jobs declined
to comment on at the conference.

o Report:
Consumers Willing to Pay More for Mobile Music Downloads
Port Washington, N.Y. -- The mobile music market will mature
greatly in 2006, as 56% of teens and 20% of all respondents overall
are currently interested in purchasing an MP3-capable phone,
according to a report from market research firm NPD Group.
Additionally, the survey found that consumers are willing to pay
more for songs downloaded to mobile phones ($1.75) than they cost
when purchased from online stores (99 cents). More than half said
they'd like to be able to add songs from a PC to a music phone,
while 37% said they would rather pay to download songs directly to
their phones. Among other emerging mobile music services, 25% said
they were interested in ringback tones, while 21% indicated interest
in accessing satellite radio channels on their phones. Sixty-one
percent of mobile phones on the market are now capable of
downloading ringtones, and NPD found that ringtone purchasers have
doubled over the past year, from 9% to 17% of those surveyed.
"Mobile music is poised to be the breakout content category of
2006," said Clint Wheelock, NPD vice president of wireless research.
"With a major emphasis and heavy promotion by wireless carriers,
device manufacturers, and the music industry itself, you can bet
that consumers will be hearing a lot about new music services."

o Google May Be
Set to Launch Wi-Fi Internet Service
Mountain View, Calif. -- Google is apparently preparing to launch
a new wireless Internet service. The company makes vague references
to a service, called Google
WiFi on several areas of its website, though offers few details. The
company is now offering a beta download of its "Google Secure
Access" software, which it says is allows users to "establish a more
secure connection while using Google WiFi." Industry buzz about such
a move has circulated for several weeks, since Business 2.0 magazine
wrote that Google's jump into the service provider arena "could
become a reality." The news sent Google shares up about 1.4% in
Tuesday's trading.

o Court
Orders China's Baidu to Remove MP3 Links; Search Firm Plans Appeal
Beijing -- Baidu, China's most popular search engine, was ordered
by a Chinese court on Monday to stop providing links to illegal
music download sites, the result of a lawsuit filed by a Chinese
joint venture of major record label EMI, according to published
reports. Baidu, which faces similar lawsuits from the world's other
major record labels, said on Tuesday it plans to appeal the ruling.
"We believe that the district court order was based on a
misunderstanding of the search engine technology and therefore is
without merit," Baidu lawyer Decheng Li said in a statement. In
addition to removing the links in question to illegal downloads of
EMI songs, Baidu was ordered by the Beijing court to pay $8,400 to
the label -- $247 for each of the 34 copyrights infringed in the
complaint. "We believe the district court's order would constitute
an unfair restriction on the search engine, legitimate multimedia
file owners as well as Internet search users," Li added. Baidu's
stock is now trading at nearly triple the price of its Aug. 5 IPO on
the Nasdaq.

o AOL to Debut
New Internet Phone Service
Dulles, Va. -- Hoping to turn the tide on its dwindling
membership base, America Online said on Tuesday that it will begin
rolling out its newly enhanced Internet phone (Voice over Internet
Protocol) service in early October. The company said that its
TotalTalk service, which will allow subscribers with high-speed
Internet connections to make comparatively inexpensive phone calls,
will debut on Oct. 4. AOL said that customers needn't subscribe to
its Internet service, and current AOL Internet Phone subscribers
will be upgraded to the new offering automatically. The service will
include free PC-to-PC and PC-to-phone capabilities, voice, email and
instant messaging, enhanced voicemail and call management
capabilities. It will also give users the ability to make and
receive calls on a home phone line from anywhere they have access to
AOL's AIM instant messenger.

o Report:
Country Flocked to New Orleans Media Sites
Reston, Va. -- Americans seeking online news and information
about Hurricane Katrina went straight to the source, dramatically
increasing visitation to New Orleans' local media outlets in August,
according to a new report from comScore Media Metrix. NOLA.com, the
website of the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper, saw its traffic
increase by 277% from July to 1.7 million visitors, with 61% of the
site's visitors residing in parts of the country safely located
outside the storm's path. Meanwhile, New Orleans' CBS affiliate WWL-TV
saw traffic to its site, WWLTV.com, increase by 258% to 878,000.
"Sites with specific local content rarely see this kind of growth,
but the Internet allowed the entire nation to access information
straight from the epicenter of the disaster," said Peter Daboll, the
president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix.

content with online shopping, and features editorial staffers from
Vogue, In Style, Elle, Harper's and The New York Times. Huntington

o Report: Local
Radio Websites Should Integrate Podcasts, Ringtones
New York -- A survey of 35,000 radio listeners found that local
radio stations would do well to better integrate their websites, and
offer streaming channels, podcasts and ringtones to cater to growing
interest from the key 18-29 year-old demographic. The MediaSpan
study, performed by Frank N. Magid Associates, shows that 40% of
these radio listeners access streaming radio stations weekly; 28%
said they downloaded music monthly, with 14% saying they "purchased"
their songs; 11% said they downloaded podcasts monthly, and 26% said
they download ringtones every month. Many of the survey respondents,
who were culled from 73 radio station websites, said they would
download this content from radio station sites if it were available.
"The study clearly showed that on-air radio has a complementary
audience, online that is young, affluent, highly attractive to
advertisers, and looking for unique content," said MediaSpan's Mark
Zagorski. "In order for stations to renew and grow their audience
relationships with a new generation of listeners, they will need to
incorporate new media activities such as podcasts, streaming and
integrated music downloads into their daily on-air and online
programming."

o Yahoo CEO
Calls for U.K. Programs for Internet TV
London -- Yahoo CEO Terry Semel announced that he is planning to
develop an international Internet TV network and invited U.K.
broadcasters to provide programs that his company could distribute.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society's Cambridge Convention,
Semel said he wanted work with U.K. broadcasters to unlock their
archives as part of a strategy to be "not a product company," but a
"major distribution platform." Semel also urged independent
producers to think of Yahoo as an outlet for new programming. "I
don't think that Yahoo or any other Internet company should try to
become a television network," Semel said. "We will be nowhere if we
have to create our own content." Yahoo said it expects to have more
than 200 million active users by year's end using services such as
mail or Web hosting.

(Los Angeles) The New York Times on Tuesday reported on New
Venture PR, a public relations firm that focuses on technology and
new media companies, utilizing a rare business model of taking a
stake in the companies it represents instead of industry standard
retainer fees. The company reaped a seven-figure windfall when its
ringtone distributor client Zingy was sold for $80 million. "There's
nothing like everyone sitting at the table being equally vested,
rather than working at a big P.R. firm…Sure you'll write a press
release and put it on the wire, but you're not passionate about it,"
New Venture PR co-founder Hal Bringman told The Times. However, some
are skeptical of the business model. "If you have a personal
financial interest in the story, I think it's too easy for human
beings to find themselves in a position of compromising their
values," Stanton Communications managing director Deborah Redman
told The Times.
