o Electronics
Makers Propose Single Remote for All Networked Home Devices
Washington -- The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), a trade
group made up of many of the world's electronic device makers, has
published a new standard that aims to allow any networked
entertainment device in the home to be controlled through a TV
screen with a single remote control. The CEA-2027 standard would
support devices like home stereos, digital video recorders and PCs,
and would allow for full control of each device's special functions
from the main TV screen interface. "This standard will help ensure
that TVs in the future continue to add value to consumers' viewing
experience beyond simply displaying a picture and that TVs remain
the intelligent point of control for home entertainment," said CEA
chief executive Gary Shapiro.

o Report:
Digital TV Transition Has Long Way to Go
Washington -- A report from the Digital Transition Coalition (DTC),
a coalition of consumer and taxpayer groups and technology firms,
said on Tuesday that the country's transition to digital TV
broadcasting is not progressing as quickly as claimed by the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). Citing FCC and Primus
Geographics data, the DTC said the transition excludes millions of
Americans, especially in rural areas, and notes that 36% of
households currently cannot receive digital service from at least
one network (i.e. ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC). Additionally, over 5 million
households (5.1%) can't get any network digital service at all. "The
proportion of unserved households is even more alarming in the most
sparsely populated states -- typically states with a
disproportionate number of rural households," the DTC wrote in a
letter to the FCC. "In the 10 states with the fewest households, a
full 74.2% of these households are unserved by at least one of their
local network stations. These maps and data thus illustrate
graphically the distance that still needs to be traversed to achieve
the goals of the DTV transition."

o Chipmaker
Broadcom to Acquire U.K. Wireless Video Firm Alphamosaic
Cambridge, England -- Broadcom Corp., a communications chip vendor
based in Irvine, California, announced on Tuesday that it has agreed
to pay $127 million in cash and shares for privately held
Alphamosaic Ltd., a U.K.-based multimedia chip developer for cell
phone makers. Broadcom said it made the acquisition in order to
strengthen its mobile product portfolio and allow it to provide
complete reference designs for multimedia mobile phone platforms. "Broadcom's
impressive wireless product portfolio is a perfect complement to our
VideoCore products, strengthening the presence of both companies in
worldwide cellular markets," said Alphamosaic CEO Jalal Bagherli.
Alphamosaic, which was spun out of Cambridge Consultants Ltd. in
2001, offers video optimized for wireless communications by changing
