o Sony Cuts 20% Off Price of PlayStation 3 in Japan

Tokyo - Sony announced on Friday that it will knock 20% off the price of its forthcoming PlayStation 3 console in Japan, but currently has no plans to do the same for the U.S. or other markets, the Associated Press reported. The discount follows Microsoft's announcement of pricing for an HD DVD player accessory, which brought the total price for an Xbox 360 and HD DVD player in under Sony's initial $515 price tag for the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 -- which features an embedded Blu-ray DVD player -- will now sell for $410 when it goes on sale in Japan on Nov. 11, below Microsoft's $427 price tag for a premium Xbox 360 and the HD DVD accessory. The PlayStation 3 will go on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 17, priced at $499 for a 20GB model and $599 for a 60GB model.

o Google Loses Appeal in Belgium; Must Post Ruling to Website

Brussels - Google has lost its appeal of a Belgian court ruling that ordered the company to post an earlier ruling on its website from the same court that said Google must remove certain Belgian newspaper story snippets from its Google News service, Reuters reported. The loss means Google also remains liable for part of the ruling that fines the company nearly $641,000 a day, for every day after Sept. 5 it does not publish the ruling on its website. While Google has removed the snippets of stories from French- and German-language Belgian newspapers from Google News, as ordered by the court, as of Friday the company still had not posted the ruling on its website. "We are very disappointed that the court has decided to uphold its decision that the original judgment be posted to Google.be and news.google.be," a Google spokesman said. "We believe that Google News is entirely lawful and brings real benefits to publishers by driving web traffic -- and users -- to their sites." Google previously lost a case in U.S. court brought by Agence France Presse, and removed articles from the French news organization from Google News.

o Publishers Developing Automated Usage Rights Data for Search Engines

London - In the wake of a Belgian court dispute over Google's use of news stories for its Google News aggregation service, a coalition of print media associations has developed an automated system that would provide embedded usage guidelines within stories distributed on the Web. The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) plans to launch its Automated Content Access Protocol (ACAP) system, which will provide search engine "spiders" that trawl news sites with information on how stories may be used, by the end of the year. "This system is intended to remove completely any rights conflicts between publishers and search engines," said WAN chairman Gavin O'Reilly. "This industry-wide initiative positively answers the growing frustration of publishers, who continue to invest heavily in generating content for online dissemination and use." As it currently operates, Google News enables publishers to opt out of allowing their articles to be included in the news index; WAN said ACAP could automatically tell Google that a publisher's articles may be used, for instance, but only for a limited time and after first paying a royalty. The World Association of Newspapers counts 72 national newspaper associations among its members.

o MTV Acquires "Guitar Hero" Game Developer Harmonix for $175 Million

New York - Viacom's MTV Networks announced on Friday that it will acquire Harmonix Music Systems, the video game developer behind interactive music titles like "Guitar Hero," for $175 million in cash. MTV previously partnered with Massachusetts-based Harmonix to feature "Guitar Hero" in its programming and various promotions; the game is among the top-selling titles for PlayStation 2. The game's publisher, Activision/Red Octane, said earlier this week that it will expand distribution of "Guitar Hero II" to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year. "Guitar Hero II" for PlayStation 2 is slated for release in November. Founded in 1995 by veterans of the MIT Media Laboratory's computer music group, Harmonix has also developed the music-related titles "Amplitude" and "Frequency."

o Time Warner to Sell AOL France to Neuf Cegetel for $365 Million

Dulles, Va. - Just three days after announcing a deal to sell its AOL Germany unit, media giant Time Warner said on Thursday that it has agreed to sell its AOL France Internet access business to Neuf Cegetel for $365 million in cash. Under the deal, the French company will acquire AOL France's 500,000 broadband customers, as well as the 500-employee business that manages its customer service operations. AOL will provide audience services and manage the online advertising sales for Neuf Cegetel's Internet portal audience, which totals about 9 million unique visitors monthly. On Monday, Time Warner announced a deal to sell AOL Germany to Telecom Italia for $870 million in cash, and the company said that negotiations also are underway for its U.K. business. The sales are all part of a broader plan to shift AOL from an Internet access business to one that derives its revenue primarily from Internet advertising.

o SEC Requests Information on Electronic Arts Stock Option Grants

Redwood City, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts has joined the ranks of fellow publishers THQ, Take-Two and Activision, who have all received requests from the SEC for information regarding their granting of stock options to employees. The SEC is investigating more than 100 firms that may have "backdated" stock options, or changed the date on which they were granted in order to increase their value for employees. Redwood City, Calif.-based EA said in July that its own internal review of its stock options granting practices revealed no irregularities. The company separately announced that a lawsuit filed by a pension fund against EA, alleging improprieties in its stock options grants, has been voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff.

o Report: Web 2.0 Companies Gaining Momentum in Venture Capital Market

San Francisco - The newest wave of Internet start-ups, dubbed Web 2.0, are gaining momentum at a substantial pace in the U.S. venture capital market, according to a new research study from Dow Jones VentureOne. Dow Jones VentureOne said that 49 Web 2.0 companies have been funded in the first half of this year, raising a total of $262.3 million in equity capital. That compares with 51 deals and $199.1 million invested into similar companies in all of 2005. While the investment levels are growing, so far the data shows that Web 2.0 is a relatively small portion of the U.S. venture capital market, which saw $13 billion going to more than 1,200 companies in the first half of this year.
