o Microsoft Launches Paid Search
Advertising Service
New York -- Microsoft has created its own paid search advertising
service to compete with Google and Yahoo, offering additional
features over its rivals for advertisers to target users based on
their sex, age and location. The company on Monday launched its
adCenter service on MSN websites in France and Singapore, with
testing of the service in the U.S. to commence in October. "We think
we will offer advertisers better value because of the superior
information we have about our audience," Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice
president of MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division
at Microsoft, told The New York Times. The company also told The
Times it hopes to replace the paid search ads currently provided by
Yahoo on its U.S. MSN sites with its own by the spring of 2006.

o China
Cracks Down on Internet News Sites
Beijing -- China has installed new regulations on news websites
operating in the country, banning "the spreading of any news with
content that is against national security and public interest," the
state-operated Xinhua news agency reported. News websites were
already compelled to register with the government for permission to
publish, while blog operators were recently added to this
requirement; foreign news websites are often blocked altogether from
access by Chinese citizens. "We need to better regulate the online
news services with the emergence of so many unhealthy news stories
that will easily mislead the public," said a spokesman with the
State Council Information Office. The announcement also asks for
pubic assistance in supervising news sites, asking anyone who finds
"unhealthy online stories" to report them at a government website.

established artists new platforms for reaching more of their fans on
a global scale," said Warner Music chairman and CEO Edgar Bronfman
