o Internet Gambling Bill May Not
Get Vote Before Congressional Recess
Washington - A bill that would ban most forms of Internet
gambling in the U.S. may not come up for a vote before the end of
the week, when the Congressional session concludes for the midterm
elections, Reuters reported. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.),
one of the bill's proponents, had sought to tack the legislation
onto a pending defense bill. But Senate Armed Services Committee
Chairman John Warner (R-Va.) wrote in a letter to Frist on Monday
that he has "firmly opposed putting any (unrelated) bills in the
conference report." The bill's proponents are still working to add
the gambling bill to different pending legislation. "I wouldn't
pronounce it dead yet," a senior Democratic aide told Reuters.

Apple Meets With Nordic Consumer Groups Over iTunes Terms
Oslo, Norway - Representatives from Apple Computer met
with consumer regulators in Norway on Monday, to discuss several
Nordic countries' legal objections to Apple's iTunes Store, the
Associated Press reported. Objections from consumer groups from
Finland, Norway and Sweden criticize Apple's tying songs downloaded
from its iTunes Store to its iTunes player; Apple's contention that
British law applies to iTunes in their countries; and contract terms
that allow Apple to change terms of the transaction even after songs
are purchased. Apple defended its positions in a 50-page letter to
the groups, which preceded Apple's meeting with Norwegian Consumer
Ombudsman Bjoern Erik Thon on Monday. "Our meeting was much more
constructive than I expected it would be," Thon told CNET News.com.
"We argued and did not agree on a lot, but we discussed all issues."
Thon added that he has not ruled out referring the matter to
Norway's Market Council, a body empowered to compel Apple to comply
with Norwegian laws or shut down iTunes in the country. "I would not
close the door on bringing the case to the Market Council, but we
are looking for other ways," Thon told AP.

File-Sharing Network LimeWire Files Countersuit Against RIAA
San Francisco - LimeWire, a long-running peer-to-peer
file-sharing service that was recently sued for copyright
infringement by the major record labels, on Monday filed a
countersuit alleging the labels have engaged in unfair business
practices, CNET News.com reported. "Their goal was simple: to
destroy any online music distribution service they did not own or
control, or force such services to do business with them on
exclusive and/or other anticompetitive terms," LimeWire says in its
countersuit, which alleges the labels violated the Sherman Act and
Clayton Act. "While most commercial illicit P2P networks have
ultimately abided by the Supreme Court's unanimous decision,
LimeWire is a conspicuous holdout," an RIAA representative told
News.com. "A kitchen sink of frivolous charges doesn't change the
law, the Supreme Court's ruling or the fact that LimeWire has built
a business based on theft and continues to profit from it."
Following the Supreme Court's file-sharing decision, the RIAA sent
cease-and-desist letters to a number of file-sharing networks,
including LimeWire; since that time, i2Hub, BearShare, iMesh, WinMX
and eDonkey have all shut down their free file-sharing networks.

Report: Sirius Satellite Radio
Subscribers to Surpass Rival XM by
2009
Glendale, Calif. - Subscribers to Sirius Satellite Radio
will surpass rival XM's subscriber count by 2009, according to a
radio market research report from Bridge Ratings. The firm projects
that XM will count 8.2 million subscribers by the end of 2006, while
Sirius will have 6.5 million. But by 2010, Sirius is projected to
have 12.5 million subscribers, compared with XM's 12.2 million. "The
advent of HD radio and increasing growth of Internet radio will slow
original growth projections for satellite radio," the report said.
By 2010, the digital radio market is also projected to include 15.9
million HD Radio listeners, 91.5 million Internet radio listeners,
and 1.48 million accessing mobile phone streaming radio service.
"The key here is this: Internet radio is quickly becoming the
preferred medium over satellite radio and, traditional radio among
15-30 year old early adopters," the report said. "The lackluster
projected growth of HD Radio suggests by current research that
unless additional interactive technology is added and programming
and technical problems improve, HD's free channels will do little to
fend off other digital audio alternatives to terrestrial radio."

research firm comScore Media Metrix estimates that 80% of MySpace's

I Publish Press Launches Inaugural
Fiction Writing Competition
Newcastle, Ontario - Online
publishing start-up I Publish Press
announced on Wednesday a call for
entries to its inaugural Fiction
Writing Competition. Twelve winning
submissions will be published by I
Publish Press and featured
prominently for sale on its website.
"We want twelve great new books to
showcase to all those eager readers
out there," said Michelle Noel,
editor and co-publisher of I Publish
Press. "We think the way the
conventional publication process
works, many talented authors are
overlooked. The Bronte sisters,
Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce all
published through unconventional
means at one time or another."
