o Army Probes Site Where Soldiers
Trade Gory Battlefield Photos for Porn
New York - The New York Times reported on Wednesday that
the U.S. Army is investigating a website that offers soldiers free
pornography in exchange for gruesome pictures of dead Iraqis and
Afghans. "Pictures in this forum are submitted by U.S. Soldiers from
over in Iraq and Afghanistan and will probably be a little gory. So
if you get sick easy or have a problem with dead terrorists please
don't look here," reads a note on NowThatsFuckedUp.com, whose
contents include photos of soldiers posing with dead and dismembered
bodies, with crude captions. A Pentagon official told The Times it
was reviewing whether the photos might be a violation of the Geneva
Conventions, while Army spokesman Paul Boyce told The Times they
might violate the "conduct unbecoming an officer" provision of the
Uniform Code of Military Justice. "To me, this is from the soldier's
slant. This is directly from them. They can take the digital cameras
and take a picture and send it to me, and that's the most raw you
can get it. I like to see it from their point of view, and I think
it's newsworthy," Chris Wilson, the site's administrator, said in an
interview last week in USC's Online Journalism Review.

o Feds Get
First Conviction Under New Movie Theater Camcorder Piracy Law
San Jose, Calif. - Federal prosecutors have obtained their
first conviction under a new law that makes it a crime to sneak a
camcorder into a movie theater to record films for piracy purposes.
Curtis Salisbury, 19, of St. Charles, Mo. -- a box office employee
at a theater in nearby St. Louis -- pleaded guilty on Monday to
recording screenings of "The Perfect Man" and "Bewitched" and then
posting them on the Internet, a violation of the recently enacted
Family Entertainment Copyright Act. "Camcording movies in theaters
and putting them on the Internet for distribution is a federal
crime," said U.S. Attorney Kevin V. Ryan. "This first conviction
under the Family Entertainment Copyright Act demonstrates that the
U.S. Attorney’s Office and our CHIP Unit will aggressively employ
the tools provided by Congress and the President to combat the theft
of intellectual property." The prosecution was part of a larger
continuing investigation, Operation Copycat, which has resulted in
indictments against six persons thus far. Under the Family
Entertainment Copyright Act, Salisbury faces up to three years in
prison and $250,000 in fines for recording the films, and an
additional five years in prison and $250,000 in fines for uploading
the films to the Internet. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb.
27 in federal court in San Jose, Calif.

o Eight
Charged in Online Leak of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith"
Los Angeles - Eight people face federal charges in
connection with posting an illegal copy of "Star Wars Episode III:
Revenge of the Sith" on the Internet before its release in theaters,
Reuters reported. The U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles said 28-year-old
Albert Valente has pleaded guilty to stealing a copy of the film
from the post-production house he worked at in Lakewood, Calif.;
copyright infringement and other charges were also filed against six
others, including 36-year-old Marc Hoaglin, of Huntington Beach,
Calif., who participated in posting the film online. Both face
prison terms of up to three years and fines of up to $250,000.
Separately, the U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles also said 37-year-old
Ronald Redding, of Linthicum Heights, Md., pleaded guilty to
misdemeanor copyright charges in connection with giving away a
"screener" DVD copy of "Million Dollar Baby" he received to use for
voting on Academy Awards.

o Apple
Acknowledges Limited iPod Nano Screen Manufacturing Flaw
San Francisco - Apple Computer has acknowledged that a
manufacturing issue affecting a small number of its iPod Nano
digital music players causes their screens to crack easily, and said
that it will replace the defective units. "This is a real but minor
issue that involved a vendor quality problem in a small number of
units," Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr told the Associated Press. "This
has affected less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the total iPod Nano
units that we've shipped. And it's not a design issue." A number of
Nano owners have also complained on a website called
FlawedMusicPlayer.com that the devices' screens also scratch too
easily, to the point that they are difficult to read. Apple rebuffed
these claims, adding that the Nano is made of the same polycarbonate
plastic as other iPod models. "A few vocal customers are saying
their Nano is more susceptible to scratching than prior iPods," an
Apple representative told CNET News.com. "If customers are concerned
about scratching, we suggest they use one of the many iPod Nano
cases that are now becoming available."

o Toshiba Delays
U.S. Release of HD DVD Players to Early 2006
Tokyo - Japanese consumer electronics firm Toshiba
announced on Wednesday that it will delay the release of its
next-generation HD DVD players in the U.S. from the end of the year
until February or March. The delay will likely erase some of
Toshiba's lead over rival Sony, which plans to begin selling DVD
players and PlayStation 3 consoles featuring its competing Blu-ray
Disc format around the same time. "We have been discussing with
content holders the most effective way to launch in the U.S. market,
and it will probably be in February or March," Toshiba corporate
senior vice president Yoshihide Fujii said at a news conference in
Tokyo, Reuters quoted. Toshiba still plans to release HD DVD players
in Japan before the end of the year, but said it would take
additional time to ramp up mass-production for foreign markets.

o Report: 2005
U.S. Internet Ad Revenue Up 26% to $5.8 Billion
New York - U.S. Internet ad revenues for the first half of
2005 rose 26% over the same period last year, to a record $5.8
billion, according to a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers conducted
for the New York-based Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB). Search
advertising spending grew 27% over 2004 to $2.3 billion, while
remaining steady at 40% of the overall Internet ad market. Behind
search ads were banner ads, which accounted for 20% of Internet ad
revenue, and classified listings (18%). Along with search, another
fast-growing segment was rich media streaming audio and video ads,
which grew 26% in revenue over last year, but also maintained their
8% overall market share. "The consistent growth in overall revenues
shows marketers may be shifting more of their total advertising
budgets to online," said PricewaterhouseCoopers partner David
Silverman. "This is a natural development as research shows more
consumers are spending a larger percentage of their media time
online, while the flow of advertising dollars follows."

o Hackers Crack
Version 2.0 of Sony PSP Security Software
London -Hackers have once again cracked the security
technology on Sony's PSP, enabling pirated games to play on the
console, GamesIndustry.biz reported. An earlier version of the
security software was also cracked, prompting Sony to produce a
software upgrade that plugged the hole; the company enticed PSP
owners to download the upgrade by including a Web browser and the
ability to share pictures over a Wi-Fi connection. Although the
current security breach is so small that only tiny applications like
a version of Atari's "Pong" can be made to play on the PSP, a
development source told GamesIndustry.biz that, "chances are that
they'll be able to run full size apps and games on version 2
firmware within a couple of weeks."

Report: Two of Every Five Americans Now Have Broadband Access
New York - Two out of every fire Americans now have
broadband Internet access at home, according to a new study released
by Nielsen/NetRatings. The firm said that 120.8 million people, or
42% of the U.S. population, had high-speed connections in August, up
from 103.8 million in January. "Although broadband penetration among
Internet users has long been on the rise, it was always amid
speculation that the high cost of broadband would limit its
widespread adoption," said Charles Buchwalter, the vice president of
client analytics for Nielsen/NetRatings. "However, over the last
year, carriers have responded to the growing demand for lower cost
broadband, and all indications are that this trend will continue."
By contrast, fewer Internet surfers are using dial-up connections.
Among at-home Internet users, those using a narrowband connection
have decreased by 10% since August last year, from 60.6 million to
54.3 million.
