o U.S. Treasury, Banks to Collaborate on Enforcement of 'Net Gambling Ban

Washington - Under a new law passed last week that outlaws most Internet gambling, the U.S. Treasury Department and Federal Reserve Board will have nine months to develop a system that prohibit payments from U.S. bank and credit card account holders to online gambling sites, Reuters reported. A "coding-and-blocking" system, similar to one already used voluntarily by some in the industry, will be created through a collaboration between the government and the banks and credit card companies. "The way they built (the new law), it gives us a chance to work with the regulators in a constructive way to come up with a system," Greg Mesack, director of government relations for industry trade group America's Community Bankers, told Reuters.

The Napster Japan service will also be promoted via demonstration kiosks at 17 Tower Records stores, where pre-paid download cards will also be sold. Consumers will be able to purchase songs a la carte for between about $1.27 and $2.54 per track. Japanese subscribers can also choose from a basic service that includes unlimited listening on up to three PCs for $10.99 per month, or the Napster To Go premium option, which includes unlimited downloads to compatible portable devices for $16.99 per month. o Amazon Drops Stored Search, Photo Maps Features on A9 Search Engine

Seattle - Online retail giant Amazon.com has dropped several key features from its A9 Internet search service, including its ability to store all of a user's searches, and a feature that provided street-level photographs on Web maps of major U.S. cities. "A9 is shifting its priorities to areas where it can provide the greatest benefit for customers," said Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener. "A9 continues to innovate in the area of search, which includes operating A9 and enhancing product search on Amazon.com." Amazon's A9 service was launched in 2004, and in addition to the discontinued features also develops improved search features for Amazon.com. The A9.com search engine was ranked 32 among U.S. search engines in August, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

o Free Software Foundation Launches "Day Against DRM" Campaign

Boston - The Free Software Foundation (FSF), a nonprofit that promotes open source software, declared Tuesday a "Day Against DRM" (digital rights management), as part of a campaign aimed at raising awareness of what the group calls the threats posed by the technology that determines usage rights of digital media files. The FSF's DefectiveByDesign.org launched a coordinated publicity stunt that included 10,000 technologists taking part in more than 200 "actions," including protests in HAZMAT suits outside Apple stores in New York and London that suggested Apple products like the iPod are "defective and hazardous to users." Apple does not allow songs purchased from its iTunes store to be played on the iPod's competitors, a policy that has also led to complaints from consumer advocacy groups in France and Scandinavia. "We aim to raise the level of awareness to the threats posed by DRM technology, and we are calling for political action to curb this gradual abolition of our rights," said Free Software Foundation executive director Peter Brown.

o PayPlay to Sell 88-Cent Song Downloads in Unprotected MP3 Format

New York - PayPlay.FM on Tuesday introduced a digital music store that will sell downloads from a library of 600,000 tracks in the unprotected MP3 format for 88 cents per song. Founded in 2004, New York-based PayPlay also develops digital rights management technology, and in addition to MP3s its store will also sell tracks protected by the company's proprietary digital rights management software for 77 cents each. "In our opinion, the anti-DRM movement is not about making the music free or eliminating DRM, but about giving customers the freedom of choice," said PayPlay CEO Elliot Goykhman. "DRM solutions provide protection to sellers and artists, so we feel that our approach of offering incentives for DRM, while still offering unprotected MP3s is superior." Both types of downloads will be offered at 192kbps, a bitrate higher than the 128kbps tracks sold by most retailers, including iTunes. PayPlay said it also plans to launch an online video download store, PayPlay.TV, in early 2007.

o Creative's $79 Xmod Improves Audio Quality on PCs, MP3 Players

Milpitas, Calif. - Consumer electronics maker Creative on Tuesday introduced the Creative Xmod, a device that connects between stereo speakers or headphones and a PC or MP3 player and improves audio quality, by upconverting the music to its 24-bit surround audio X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity standard. The company said the device identifies "which parts of the audio stream have been truncated or damaged during compression. It intelligently and selectively restores the high and lows such as the snare drums and the bass and the cymbal crashes and guitar plucking that are damaged during the compression of MP3s." The $79 Xmod requires an AC power adapter for connecting to an iPod, one of Creative's own MP3 players, or a third-party device.

The service gives political candidates the opportunity to produce a video of up to 30 minutes that contains information on their political platform and positions, which can be accessed on-demand by Comcast Digital Cable subscribers. o Digital Sheet Music Publisher FreeHand Systems Lands Funding

Los Altos, Calif. - FreeHand Systems, a provider of digital sheet music products and services, said on Tuesday that it has raised an unspecified amount in its first institutional round of private funding from Vision Opportunity Master Fund. Kim Lorz, the CEO of FreeHand, said that the new capital will be instrumental in "cleaning up" the company's balance sheet, as well as allowing it to ship new orders. The company raised $550,000 in August in the form of a direct private investment. Los Altos-based, Calif.-based FreeHand is the manufacturer of a digital music tablet, which includes technology to display and publish digitally delivered sheet music.
