o Labels Reportedly in Talks to Consolidate CD Manufacturing, Distribution

New York -- The world's five major record labels are holding talks to
consider closing plants in the U.S. and combining their CD-making
operations to cut costs, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Proposed are joint ventures between the labels that would take over
manufacturing, as well as some warehousing and shipping operations. Labels
reportedly in talks with one another include Sony Music Entertainment, BMG
Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Recorded Music. Universal Music
Group was not mentioned to be participating. The article said a joint
venture could be formed by year's end, although any agreement would likely
come under the scrutiny of anti-trust investigations.

o Online Music Retailer Djangos.com Bids to Acquire CD Warehouse

Portland, Ore. -- Djangos.com, an online and brick-and-mortar retailer of
used and new music and movies, announced on Friday that it has offered to
acquire retail store chain CD Warehouse for $3.66 million. The price is
based on a $1 per share offer for CD Warehouse's 3.66 million outstanding
shares. CD Warehouse was delisted from the Nasdaq in April; its stock rose
100 percent on Friday's news to $0.80 on the SmallCap Market. Oregon-based
Djangos operates retail stores in 19 states, while CD Warehouse has stores
in 36 states in addition to England, Thailand, Guatemala, Canada and
Venezuela. CD Warehouse no longer sells music on the Internet, and company
CEO David Race resigned from his position in August.

o WSJ: Ted Turner Likely Won't Renew AOL Time Warner Contract

New York -- The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Ted Turner,
vice chairman of AOL Time Warner and founder of Turner Broadcasting
System, is not expected to renew his contract with the company, which is
due to expire at the end of the year. Turner would remain a large
shareholder, with just under 4 percent of AOL Time Warner stock, and would
likely retain his seat on the board of the company. Turner lost his job
running the cable networks as a result of the merger and was reportedly
unhappy with the way he was pushed aside. A person close to Turner was
quoted in the article as saying he may resign before the year's end. A
Turner Broadcasting executive was also quoted as having said that Turner
is "looking forward to the freedom he would have to be a critical board
member, when no longer an employee."

(San Francisco) CNET featured an article on Friday on the progress of
Internet2, a consortium of universities and corporate partners working on
a new, higher-speed internet. Qwest Communications said this week that it
will oversee the project for the next five years and work to increase the
system's speed to 10 Gigabytes per second -- about 155,000 times faster
than a dialup modem -- by October 2003. The Internet2 network, which is
only accessible to researchers and others involved with the project, is
currently used for such purposes as real-time streaming music lessons
between professors and students over great distances.

(San Francisco) CNET reported on Friday on the market for
technology-related conferences, which have suffered since the U.S.
terrorist attacks due to participants' new fear of flying. Organizers of
the Comdex conference in Las Vegas next month said all keynote speakers --
including Microsoft's Bill Gates and Oracle's Larry Ellison -- have
reconfirmed and that no exhibitors have dropped out. Others such as
Apple's Computer Expo have been cancelled or are offering live streaming
video access to the event for a reduced rate, such as RealNetworks'
RealConference 2001. Some have even offered free airfare to lure potential
attendees.
