o Report: Campaigns Spending $100 on TV Ads for Every $1 Spent Online

Washington -- The presidential campaigns of George W. Bush and John Kerry have largely ignored the Internet, spending more than $100 on TV campaign ads for every $1 spent on Web ads between January and August, according to a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The first-ever systematic study of online campaign advertising spending found that the Kerry campaign spent $1.3 million, compared to the Bush campaign's $419,000, while the Republican National Committee has spent $487,000 to the Democratic Committee's $257,000. Of these, most were ads seeking campaign contributions rather that ads focusing on a particular issue. However, Wired News reports that the Kerry campaign bought roughly $400,000 of ads on 50 sites after Thursday night's presidential debate, almost doubling the amount spent online in the previous eight months. "Viewership for the debate is akin to the finale of "Friends," in terms of raw numbers of viewers," DNC communications director Jano Cabrera told Wired News. "With that level of interest, we knew that a number of people would rush to the internet to find out more information about John Kerry and George W. Bush and we wanted to have a strong online presence." Over 62 million Americans watched the first presidential debate; the DNC says it plans another big online ad purchase following Tuesday evening's vice presidential debate.

o Report: 37 Million U.S. HDTV Homes by 2008 Still Short of Federal Mandate

Boston -- The number of U.S. households with high-definition television sets will increase from 8.7 million in 2003 to 14 million this year, and, spurred by competition, falling prices and federal regulations are expected to increase to 37 million by 2008, according to Boston-based market research firm Strategy Analytics. However, the firm predicts this rapid growth will still fall short of the penetration levels needed (85% of households per market with digital TVs) to compel broadcasters to make a full transition to digital broadcasting as mandated by FCC regulatory measures. Strategy Analytics advises that "legislators and the FCC must seriously consider further regulatory measures, such as the down-conversion of digital signals or the subsidy of adaptors for millions of existing TVs."

o AT&T Wireless Launches First U.S. Mobile Digital Music Store

Seattle -- Mobile network operator AT&T Wireless on Tuesday launched the nation's first mobile music store, which allows consumers to order tracks on their cell phones for download to a PC. The mMode Music Store, built with partners Loudeye and Microsoft, allows users to browse and sample nearly 750,000 songs, and then purchase the song in Windows Media format for download to a PC. The $0.99 tracks may also be burned to CD or transferred to over 70 devices supporting Windows Media, with the major exception of Apple's iPod. Songs purchased may be billed either automatically to monthly wireless statements or to a credit card.

o Netflix Sees 73% Subscriber Increase, Raises Profit Forecasts

Los Gatos, Calif. -- Online DVD rental service Netflix announced that it has seen a 73% increase in subscribers since the third quarter of 2003, and added that its third-quarter profit will be far greater than forecasts. Netflix now expects to see profit of as much as $17.5 million, compared with earlier predictions of between $6.7 and $10.2 million, and said that subscribers now number 2.2 million, up from 1.3 million a year ago. The company said that subscribers were renting fewer movies per month than expected, possibly because of interest in the Olympics, thereby lowering its costs to process and deliver orders and increasing its profits.

o Microsoft CEO Ballmer: iPods Filled With "Stolen" Music

London -- Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer remarked to a gathering of reporters in London that, because of its support for the MP3 audio format, much of the music stored on consumers' iPod players made by rival Apple is "stolen." While criticizing Apple's digital rights management (DRM) system and touting Microsoft's own security system, Ballmer said, "The most common format of music on an iPod is stolen… Part of the reason people steal music is money, but some of it is that the DRM stuff out there has not been that easy to use. We are going to continue to improve our DRM, to make it harder to crack, and easier, easier, easier, easier to use." Many players that support Microsoft's technology also support MP3 formats, however, and the format is also a common means of transferring music from purchased CDs onto portable players like the iPod.
