o Report: Apple to Introduce Video
iPod at Oct. 12 Event
San Jose, Calif. - Apple has invited reporters to a
special event next week in San Jose, Calif. that has many
speculating the company plans to introduce a long-rumored version of
its iPod that also plays video. "Apple Computer has begun production
of a new version of its iPod digital music player that will be
capable of playing videos, AppleInsider has learned," according to
post on the Apple enthusiast site. "Sources who claim to have seen
the new iPod describe it as being similar to Apple's 60 GB iPod
photo player, but several millimeters thinner." The reporter's
invite, which says only "One more thing…", is a nod to how Apple CEO
Steve Jobs usually introduces a new product at the conclusion of a
keynote speech.

o Study:
In-Game Advertising Found to be Particularly Effective
New York - In-game advertising, where ads are inserted
directly into video game environments and appear on virtual city
billboards and as product placements, is particularly effective,
according to a study from Nielsen Interactive and in-game ad
provider Double Fusion. The study, which examined the effectiveness
of Double Fusion's in-game ads within developer Metro3D's PC game
"London Taxi," found a 60% increase in awareness for a new product.
It also found that in-game animated 3D ads achieved twice the recall
of static billboards. Nielsen polled gamers and found that 50%
agreed that in-game advertising makes a game more realistic, while
21% disagreed; and that 54% of gamers agreed that in-game
advertising "catches your attention" (17% disagreed). "The study
provides continued evidence that in-game advertising is a medium
which brand managers across categories should be exploring,
particularly if they want to reach the highly valuable 18-34 year
old male audience," said Nielsen Interactive Entertainment managing
director Henry Piney. "What we learned is that even for new brands,
the impact that in-game advertising can have is significant."

o COMTek
Launches First City-Wide Powerline Broadband Network in Va.
Manassas, Va. - Communication Technologies (COMTek)
announced on Wednesday that it has launched the first city-wide
deployment of broadband-over-powerline Internet access in the U.S.,
for the 37,000 residents of D.C. suburb Manassas, Va. The powerline
network uses the electricity grid in a city and the wiring in
individual homes to provide broadband access through electricity
sockets, rather than over phone or cable TV lines. The company said
that currently 12,500 households and 2,500 businesses in Manassas
are covered by its network, and that it has already signed up 700
customers. "Congress is looking closely at ways to improve broadband
access in rural and other non-urban settings and that is why I am so
encouraged by the Manassas success with broadband over powerline,"
said Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.). "The City of Manassas and COMTek are
to be applauded for their leadership roles in pioneering access in a
way that has never been achieved anywhere else in the United
States."
