o WSJ: Google in Talks to Buy YouTube for $1.6 Billion

New York - The Wall Street Journal Online reported on Friday that search giant Google is in discussions to acquire the popular video-sharing site YouTube for nearly $1.6 billion. Citing a "person familiar with the matter," the paper said that talks are still in the "sensitive" stages and could break off. Both companies declined to comment. Founded last year, San Mateo, Calif.-based YouTube now commands the largest share (47%) of any company in the online video search market, bettering both MySpace (22%) and Google's own Google Video (11%), according to HitWise data. YouTube users stream more than 100 million videos daily. An analyst from RBC Capital recently speculated that MySpace could be valued at an astonishing $15 billion in a few years, while noted technology entrepreneur Mark Cuban said last week that anyone who would pay money to acquire YouTube is a "moron," citing the potential for copyright infringement lawsuits. NBC and Fox are among media firms who have asked that YouTube remove clips of their programming from its site, requests the company has complied with.

o Viacom's Redstone Not Interested in Facebook: "Price Too High"

New York - Media conglomerate Viacom, whose holdings include Paramount Pictures, MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, has ruled out a bid on social networking site Facebook, chairman Sumner Redstone said in a TV interview with Charlie Rose. "We would not consider Facebook," Redstone said. "We looked at it. The price is too high." Redstone called the experience of losing out to News Corporation's Rupert Murdoch in the competition to acquire MySpace "humiliating," adding the company's inaction was a key reason for his recent decision to oust CEO Tom Freston. "Before Rupert got into the act, MySpace was sitting there for $500 million and Tom didn't take it," Redstone told Charlie Rose. Facebook, the second most-popular social network behind MySpace, claims 9.5 million members and has also reportedly been in negotiations with Yahoo and Microsoft.

o Report: Digital Music Sales Buoy Overall Market

Los Angeles - Over 418 million tracks have been purchased from digital music retailers so far this year, a rise of 72% over the same period last year and a factor that helped buoy the overall industry, which saw physical album sales drop 8.3% in the same period, according to Nielsen SoundScan data. When digital album sales for the year so far (22.6 million, up 115% from last year) are combined with digital singles and physical sales, the overall music industry has sold 434.9 million albums so far this year, down from 439.2 million during the same period last year. The market share breakdown by label has not changed over the past year, with Universal still the largest company with 33.8%, followed by Sony BMG (26.9%), Warner (26.9%), independents (12.7%) and EMI (10%).

o MySpace Founder Seeks Federal Probe of News Corp. Purchase

New York - The founder of MySpace parent company Intermix Media, Brad Greenspan, is seeking a federal investigation of News Corp.'s $580 million purchase of the online social network, which was at the time part of his firm Intermix Media, Reuters reported. Greenspan said he has uncovered internal reports that show MySpace revenue grew 1,289% on an annualized basis between 2003 and 2005, while shareholders were given allegedly inaccurate data that cited growth of just 52% during the period. "The shareholders paid a massive price here," Greenspan, who published his report at FreeMySpace.com, told Reuters. "We've strategically built this business since the acquisition and are just now beginning to realize real financial value," a Fox Interactive Media spokeswoman told Reuters. "This is simply a case of sour grapes making for loud complaints."

o Ticketmaster Resale Service to Add Full Tour From "National Musical Act"

Los Angeles - Ticketmaster is set to announce next week the addition of the first full tour from a "national musical act" to its TicketExchange service, which allows ticket buyers with unwanted tickets to put them up for sale on Ticketmaster's site for whatever price they choose. David Marcus, Ticketmaster's vice president of strategic marketing and business development, made the announcement during a panel at Digital Media Wire's Digital Music Forum on Thursday in Los Angeles. Originally launched in 2002 as a means of combating scalpers and taking a piece of the estimated $2 billion in secondary ticket sales on eBay, StubHub and similar sites, TicketExchange to this point has mainly been used by sports teams and select venues, rather than by bands themselves. "Tickets are the worst-priced product out there in terms of determining value," said Marcus, who added that he expects a half-dozen bands will sign on to use the service for their tours this year because they're "sick of seeing fans turned away at the door." TicketExchange ensures the validity of tickets sold through the service, as Ticketmaster cancels the unique barcode on the original ticket and issues a new code for the secondary buyer. The company will charge both the buyer and seller fees for the transaction, which are visible at the time of sale or purchase. TicketExchange is not the first initiative from the company to target scalpers and the secondary market. Ticketmaster also offers an auctions service that lets fans bid on top seats at concerts, and is backing legislation that would outlaw ticket sales through any online marketplace not authorized by the original seller.

o More Than Half of MySpace Visitors in August Were 35 or Older

San Francisco - Dispelling the notion that the world's most popular online social network is exclusively a teen hang-out, more than half of visitors to MySpace in August were 35 or older, CNET News.com reported, citing comScore Media Metrix data. That figure has risen from 39.5% a year ago, while the percentage of MySpace visitors between 12-17 dropped from 25% last year, to 12% in August 2006. MySpace visitors in the 18-24 demographic remained relatively steady, at around 20%. Overall, MySpace's unique visitor count had doubled since August of last year, to 55.8 million.

o Report: U.S. Fund Raising on Track to Break All-Time Annual Record

New York - U.S. private equity firms raised $172.2 billion in 253 funds through the end of the third quarter, in increase of about 72% in capital compared to the prior year, according to Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst. The total so far this year already has exceeded the $162.5 billion raised in all of 2005 and is expected to handily surpass the record $177.9 billion raised in 2000. "If fund raising continues at the current rate of more than $57 billion per quarter, we are projecting that 2006 will end with as much as $225 billion collected in U.S. private equity funds," said Jennifer Rossa, managing editor of the Private Equity Analyst. "Private equity fund managers continue raising bigger funds in an effort to take advantage of more investment opportunities."
