o Music Publishers License Songs For Use As Cell Phone Ringtones

New York -- The Harry Fox Agency, the licensing agent of the National
Music Publishers' Association, said on Friday that it will begin licensing
compositions from its songwriter and publisher members to technology firms
that use them to create ringtones for cellular phones. Ringtones allow
cell phone users to personalize their incoming calls with versions of
their favorite songs from TV shows, soundtracks, and their favorite bands.
A phone must be capable of receiving SMS messages -- a standard on
European and Asian cellular networks, but less prevalent in the U.S. -- in
order to be able to download ringtones. New York-based Harry Fox Agency
said it has received requests for ringtone licenses from over 20 wireless
services providers. Companies such as Premium Wireless Services offer
lists of songs that users can make their ringtone, and then charge a fee
to download them to a cell phone. PWS has independently licensed songs
from EMI Music Publishing, Warner-Chappel and Sony ATV for use as
ringtones.

o Playboy to Lay Off One-Third of Employees in Online Division

Chicago -- Adult entertainment publisher Playboy announced on Friday that
it will lay off one-third of the staff -- or 44 employees -- from its
online division as part of a plan to streamline the organization and cut
costs. Playboy is laying off a total of about 90 workers, and will operate
with 70 employees remaining in the online division. The company said the
effects of the streamlining will not be realized until next year, and
reaffirmed its earlier assertion that its online business will become
profitable during 2002.

o Sega Units Designing Games for Microsoft's Xbox

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft said on Friday that two units of game
development firm Sega are creating games for its Xbox video game console,
due to be released on Nov. 18. SEGA-AM2, a newly formed subsidiary of
Sega, will release "Shenmue II," a sequel to the popular Sega Dreamcast
title. Sonic Team Ltd. is working on "Phantasy Star Online," a roleplaying
game that will take advantage of the Xbox's ability to connect to the
Internet via a broadband connection and link users in game play.

o Online Ad Firm DoubleClick to Lay Off "At Least" 100

New York -- Facing a difficult market for online advertising, technology
provider DoubleClick said that it may lay off at least 100 employees -- or
about 6 percent of its workforce -- before the end of the year to
compensate for the overall slowdown in ad sales. Earlier this month, New
York-based DoubleClick purchased the technology assets of rival online ad
firm L90.

o Briefly Noted:

(San Francisco) Publisher Steven Brill's Brill Media Holdings may be close
to shutting down its Inside.com and Brill's Content magazine publications,
CNET reported on Friday. Brill recently merged Inside.com parent company
Powerful Media into his own, and subsequently began charging subscription
fees to access all of the stories on the site. He later said a previously
announced print magazine called InsideContent would not be published. In
an email sent to employees Friday, Brill wrote, "I have every intention of
telling everyone exactly what is going on as soon as we have a resolution.
I expect that that will be some time early next week."

(Seattle) RealNetworks announced on Friday a new service for record labels
and artists to distribute promotional tracks on the Internet. Wind-up
Records will use the Track Promo Service to offer a free single from rock
band Creed's forthcoming album, which will time-out and become unavailable
shortly after the album is released. The track is featured at the band's
website as well as at a number of rock radio stations' sites.
Seattle-based RealNetworks is providing encoding, packaging, hosting, and
rights management reporting for the service.

(New York) Controversial recording artist Prince said on Friday that his
new album, "The Rainbow Children," will be available for download
exclusively to members of his online fan club on Oct. 17. A basic
membership to the NPG Music Club costs $7.77 per month. Prince released a
promotional single from the new album on the Napster network in April.

(Santa Clara, Calif.) Digital entertainment device maker Sonicblue
announced on Friday that it is ending its marketing and distribution
agreement with German electronics firm Loewe. Santa Clara-based
Sonicblue's Sensory Science unit had been handling the U.S. marketing and
sales of Loewe's flatscreen digital televisions. Loewe will instead form a
new unit to distribute the devices in the U.S.

(San Francisco) CNET offered a feature article on Friday that describes
how amateur cameramen became amateur journalists in New York City and
elsewhere on Sept. 11. Many people uploaded images captured with their
digital camcorders to their home PCs and published them on the Web. Such
amateur video has since found its way onto file-sharing networks like
Morpheus and a variety of small new media news sources like Free Speech
TV. "Anyone who had access to a digital camera and a Web site suddenly was
a guerrilla journalist posting these things," said graphic designer and
amateur cameraman David Vogler.
