o Federal Election Commission to
Monitor Online Campaign Finances
Washington -- A recent federal court ruling mandates that the
jurisdiction of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which
oversees federal election laws and the public funding of
Presidential elections, be extended to the Internet, the Associated
Press reported. The ruling would compel the FEC to monitor campaign
finance and spending limits on the Internet by interest groups,
campaigns and political parties; however, the FEC has said it may
appeal the ruling. "I don't think anybody here wants to impede the
free flow of information over the Internet," FEC vice chairwoman
Ellen Weintraub told AP. "The question then is, where do you draw
the line?" The FEC exempted online ads from a federal ban on
coordination between candidates and corporate-funded groups, but
last month's ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Colleen
Kollar-Kotelly reversed the FEC exemption.

o Earnings for
Yahoo Nearly Quadruple
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Buoyed by stronger online advertising and
the sale of its stake in Google, Yahoo on Tuesday reported quarterly
profits that nearly quadrupled from a year ago. The company posted
net income of $253.3 million, compared with a profit of $65.3
million in the third quarter of 2003. That figure included a profit
of $129 million related to the company's sale of its investment in
Google, as well as a tax benefit. Revenue was $906.7 million, up
from $356.8 million. "Yahoo began to demonstrate the next stage in
the company's evolution in the third quarter," said Terry Semel, the
company's chairman and CEO. "We accelerated the pace at which new
products and services were developed, which in-turn helped increase
the level of user engagement across the Yahoo network." Yahoo also
on Tuesday received antitrust approval from the Federal Trade
Commission for its $160 million acquisition of Musicmatch. The FTC
concluded its probe of the deal without taking any action.

o HP Extends
Multi-Million Dollar Technology Pact With DreamWorks
Palo Alto, Calif. -- PC maker HP announced on Wednesday that it
has signed a three-year extension of its multi-million dollar
agreement with Hollywood film studio DreamWorks SKG. Under the deal,
HP will continue to provide the computing infrastructure for
DreamWorks' digital studios -- used to create "Shrek" and its sequel
-- and will collaborate with the studio on digital editing, digital
cinema and digital asset management. The agreement also calls for HP
to receive certain rights for co-branding and joint consumer
marketing initiatives tied to DreamWorks' 2005 release of
"Madagascar" and other animated films.

o Zoom Systems
Raises $6.3 Million in First Round
San Francisco -- Zoom Systems, a San Francisco-based maker of
automated retail systems used in hotels, airports, retail locations
and campuses, said on Tuesday that it has landed $6.3 million in its
first round of venture capital financing, led by Menlo Park-based
Sierra Ventures. All of the company's current investors and board
members also participated. "We are excited about Zoom because we
believe that Zoom's new channel can change retail consumer behavior
just like ATMs and Internet e-commerce," said Jeff Loomans, a
venture partner with Sierra Ventures. Zoom makes stand-alone retail
stores with more than 100 products, where consumers select items via
an interactive touch screen. Each shop is centrally controlled using
a network management system that constantly provides sales,
inventory and operational data.
