o Justice Department Widens Investigation of MusicNet, Pressplay

New York -- The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has expanded its
investigation of potential antitrust concerns posed by the major labels'
joint ventures to distribute music online, The Wall Street Journal
reported on Monday. Currently, major labels Warner Music, BMG and EMI are
working with AOL and RealNetworks to develop a subscription service called
MusicNet, while Sony Music and Universal Music have partnered with
Microsoft to launch Pressplay. The DOJ sent subpoenas to the major labels
asking for records of their licensing agreements with one another, to find
out if the agreements effectively eliminate potential competition from
other online services. Companies such as Napster and FullAudio are
currently working to attain such licenses, and one company, MusicBank,
shut down before even launching its service due to its inability to secure
such licenses. U.K.-based paper The Sunday Times reported that the
European Union is also investigating anti-trust issues related to the
subscription services. "There are several aspects that merit investigation
to determine whether or not there are restrictions of competition," said a
spokesman for Mario Monti, the EU's competition commissioner.

o Congress Rejects RIAA Additions to Anti-Terrorism Bill

Washington -- An amendment to anti-terrorism legislation proposed by the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) that would have given the
recording industry the authority to snoop on users' computers and delete
pirated files has been defeated, Wired News reported on Monday. A draft of
the bill stated that the RIAA and other copyright holders would not be
held liable for any other files that may have been accidentally deleted in
the process of sniffing out infringers. The RIAA said that the current
bill, without its amendment, could interfere with their efforts to stem
copyright infringement online. "We might try and block somebody," RIAA
lobbyist Mitch Glazier told Wired News. "If we know someone is operating a
server, a pirated music facility, we could try to take measures to try and
prevent them from uploading or transmitting pirated documents." Glazier
said the RIAA has abandoned this amendment in favor of a more moderate
stance.

Warburg Pincus. Campbell-based IUniverse claims it has produced more

o Brill Selling Inside.com, Shutting Down Brill's Content Magazine

San Francisco -- CNET reported on Monday that publisher Steven Brill will
sell online media and entertainment industry news site Inside.com to
Primedia and is also shutting down his Brill's Content magazine, according
to an email sent to employees and obtained by CNET. Financial terms of the
Inside.com sale were not disclosed. Most of Inside.com's 40-member staff
will be laid off, and the site will instead feature Primedia articles.
"This was not the way I wanted things to turn out for me, for my
unstintingly supportive Brill Media partners, for those at Primedia with
whom we have worked, and for you," Brill wrote in the email. Brill will
also end ties with Primedia, with which he partnered to create Media
Central, a central online location meant to distribute articles originally
written for Primedia's many media-related publications.
