Prices $42 Million IPO
San Francisco -- Shares of San Francisco-based PlanetOut rose

gays and lesbians raised nearly $42 million in its initial public
offering (IPO). The company priced 4.65 million shares at the low
end of the estimated price range of $9-$11. The stock, listed on the
Nasdaq under the symbol "LGBT," closed at $10.40. The company said
that it will use the proceeds to pay down its debt, as well as for

o U.K. Court
Orders ISPs to Divulge Song Swappers' Names
London -- The U.K. High Court this week ordered local Internet
service providers (ISPs) to provide the U.K. music industry with the
identities of people accused of using the Internet to exchange songs
for free. In his ruling, U.K. Justice Blackburne said that, "on the
face of it, this appears to be a powerful case of copyright
infringement". The ruling is a major victory for the British
Phonographic Industry (BPI) and the International Federation of the
Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which together announced last week
that they planned to file charges against 28 people in the U.K. for
contravening copyright law. U.K. ISPs now have less than two weeks
to comply with the court order, providing both names and addresses
for the people in question.

o Netflix:
Amazon.com May Enter Online DVD Rental Market
Los Gatos, Calif. -- Shares of online DVD rental service Netflix
plunged over 40% on Friday after the company said it learned that
online retail giant Amazon.com may be planning to enter the market
for online DVD rentals. "Our customers have been encouraging us to
offer low-price, online DVD rentals, but we have no announcement to
make at this time," Amazon spokeswoman Patty Smith told Reuters.
Both Blockbuster and Wal-Mart have launched online DVD rental
services as well. Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix said it plans to
discount its subscription price from $22 to $18 a month in
anticipation of looming competition; the company earlier this year
raised subscriptions from $20 to $22. Netflix currently counts over
2.2 million subscribers.

o Starbucks
Expanding In-Store Custom CD Burning Service
Seattle -- Starbucks announced this week that it plans to expand its
in-store custom CD burning service to an additional 45 stores, as
part of a multi-phased national rollout. The company plans to offer
Hear Music media bars, which allow customers to browse a digital
library of 150,000 songs on HP touch-screen kiosks and burn a custom
CD, to 15 Seattle stores and 30 stores in Austin, Texas this month.
The first Hear Music Coffeehouse was launched in Santa Monica,
Calif. earlier this year. "The Hear Music media bar demonstrates
another highly strategic extension of our brand as we continue
moving towards our goal of transforming the way music is discovered
and acquired," said Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz.

o CNET to
Acquire China's ZOL and Fengniao
San Francisco -- CNET Networks, the San Francisco-based media
company focused on technology news and information, said on Thursday
that it will acquire China's ZOL and Fengniao, which operate the
zol.com.cn and fengniao.com web sites, respectively. Under the
deals, CNET said that it will pay a total of $16 million in cash
over the next two quarters. ZOL is a provider of online personal
technology-related content and shopping services in Northern China.
Fengniao focuses on digital photography, with reviews on over 1,000
digital cameras, as well as a large image database, content and
forums related to digital photography. Combined, the businesses
reach more than 1 million users a day, generating over 7 million
page views. CNET plans to cross market ZOL and Fengniao with its
established businesses in China.

o Briefly Noted: (Cupertino,
Calif.) Apple announced this week that its iTnues Music Store has
now sold over 150 million song downloads from its online stores
available in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany. NPD Group data
released earlier this week found Apple claims 70% of all music
downloads sold, compared with rival Napster, which accounted for
11%, and RealNetworks, Musicmatch and Wal-Mart, each with 6% share.
Apple plans next to launch versions of iTunes across a number of
other European countries.

(Cedar Knolls, N.J.) MediaBay, a provider of spoken word audio
content, announced that it has partnered with Celebrity Newsletter
to create an audiobook club for syndicated talk show host Larry
King. The Larry King On-line Audiobook and Entertainment Club will
launch in the first quarter of 2005, with King choosing audiobook
titles and discussing them with members in a format similar to talk
show host Oprah Winfrey's popular book club.

(Burlingame, Calif.) Japanese game developer KOEI Corporation
announced on Friday that it will release "Kessen III" for
PlayStation 2 in the first quarter of 2005. The sequel was developed
by KOEI under the direction of Kou Shibusawa, and will feature a
score composed by Reijiro Koroku.
http://www.koei.com
(Pleasanton, Calif.) Wireless entertainment publisher FunMail
announced on Friday that, since the launch of its Mobile Comics
Network service in late 2003, over one million mobile comics have
been read. The service includes comics such as "Peanuts," "Dilbert,"
"Hagar the Horrible" "Nancy" and "Zits."
http://www.mobilecomicsnetwork.com
(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Friday reported that the MP3
format is beginning to lose its status as the dominant music file
format, citing NPD Group data that found MP3 accounted for 72% of
music files on consumers' hard drives, down from 82% a year ago. MP3
still accounts for the lion's share of files traded on peer-to-peer
networks. But proprietary formats from Apple and Microsoft are
gaining ground as consumers "rip" CDs they own onto their computers
using the two companies' respective AAC and WMA formats, keeping
these tracks on their computers while more often deleting P2P MP3
downloads. NPD reported a net loss of about 742 million MP3 files
from U.S. hard drives between August 2003 and July 2004, while
Windows Media files showed a net gain of 537 million files.
