o ASCAP, Radio Stations Agree to $1.7
Billion Web Radio License Deal
New York -- ASCAP, a performing rights organization representing
thousands of songwriters and music publishers, announced on Monday
that it has reached a new $1.7 billion agreement with the Radio
Music License Committee, which represents most of the nation's
12,000 commercial radio stations, for the rights to broadcast ASCAP
songs on-air and simultaneously on radio station websites. The
agreement, which replaces previous revenue-based license fees,
finalizes license fees retroactively for the period 2001-2003 and
establishes new ASCAP licenses for the period 2004-2009. Dubbed by
both sides as "the largest single licensing deal in radio history,"
the deal was approved on Friday by U.S. District Court Judge William
C. Conner. "Effective negotiation avoided the heavy cost of
litigation for both sides and resulted in an agreement which can
only serve to strengthen the longstanding partnership between
America's leading creators of music and their most valuable
customers," said ASCAP senior vice president Vincent Candilora.

o Activision,
Nielsen, Chrysler to Study Video Game Advertising
Santa Monica, Calif. -- Video game publisher Activision announced
on Monday that it has partnered with ratings provider Nielsen
Entertainment on a system to measure the value of in-game
advertising. The companies will examine how players interact with
Chrysler Group ads for its Jeep brand in the PC version of
Activision's "Tony Hawk's Underground 2" game, using an audio
watermark embedded into the game by Nielsen. "Video games are
increasingly becoming the medium of choice for a new generation of
consumers and Chrysler Group has been at the forefront of this
exciting revolution. By teaming with Activision and Nielsen
Entertainment, we are helping to take this medium to its next
level," said Chrysler Group vice president Jeff Bell. Initially, the
in-game ad monitoring system will feature only PC games, but the
companies are in talks with console makers. Activision and Nielsen
also released details of a recent gamer survey that found 40% said
in-game ads made a game more appealing, and made them more inclined
to buy the advertised product, while 66% reported that in-game
advertising made a game more realistic, and nearly three in 10 noted
that advertising in video games was more memorable than traditional
television advertising. Additionally, the survey found 87%
remembered seeing a highly-integrated brand within a game much more
frequently than other less integrated brands.

o Report: Video
Game Ad Revenue to Hit $260 Million by 2008
Boston -- Video games will generate nearly $260 million in
advertising revenue by 2008, with $92 million coming from in-game
ads and $168 million from advergaming, according to a report from
Boston-based market research firm Yankee Group. The group projects
that 126 million U.S. gamers will spend $8.3 billion on video games
in 2008. "Surprisingly, given the size of this market, video games
have largely been ignored as a platform for advertising," said
Yankee Group senior analyst Michael Goodman. "In 2003, marketers
spent a paltry $79 million on in-game ads and advergaming. That is
about to change as advertisers realize video games are effective
platforms for reaching consumers with their marketing messages."

o Massive
Incorporated Launches In-Game Advertising Network
New York -- Massive Incorporated, developer of an in-game video game
advertising network, on Monday announced the launch of its network
targeting the lucrative audience of 18-34 year old males. The
company's network enables advertisers including RealNetworks to
deliver ads that are embedded into popular online game titles in
real-time, from publishers including Vivendi Universal Games,
Ubisoft and Legacy Interactive. The service allows advertisers to
target according to consumer demography, title genre, behavioral
data, day part and other dimensions. Massive said at launch its ad
network includes 15 game titles and reaches a weekly audience of
close to two million young men.

o Blockbuster
Discounts Online DVD Rental Service to $17.49 Per Month
Dallas -- Video rental giant Blockbuster announced on Monday that it
will discount the price of its online rental subscription service
from $20 to $17.49, undercutting rival Netflix's price cut last week
from $22.50 to $17.99. Netflix in turn said that its decision to
lower its monthly subscription fee was due to its belief that online
retail giant Amazon.com will soon launch its own DVD rental service.
Blockbuster also said that the two free in-store rentals that are
provided to its online DVD rental service subscribers may now also
be used for video game rentals. "We are determined to do whatever it
takes to be the leader in the online rental space," said Blockbuster
CEO. John Antioco. "In the first six weeks since the service
launched we've signed up more subscribers than Netflix signed up in
its first year and a half of existence. Additionally, we are
confident that we will end this year with more subscribers than
Netflix had after its first three and a half years."

Acquires Disposable DVD Maker Flexplay
Atlanta -- The Convex Group, a media and entertainment holding
company, announced on Monday that it has acquired Flexplay
Technologies, a developer of disposable DVD technology. Financial

that affixes promotional CDs to soft drink container lids -- said it
would use Flexplay discs to distribute "Noel," a holiday drama
directed by Chazz Palminteri. The film will be distributed in

o Report: 20%
Growth Projected for Online Holiday Sales
Cambridge, Mass. -- Forrester Research, a technology market research
and advisory firm, on Monday released its forecast for online
spending in the upcoming holiday season, predicting a 20% growth
over last year to $13.2 billion. That compares to an increase of 31%
during last year's holiday season over the prior year. "As online
shopping becomes more mainstream, online growth will begin to mimic
lukewarm offline sales," said Carrie Johnson, a senior analyst with
Forrester. "And, because stores are the channel most at risk of
missing sales forecasts this year, retailers will scale back online
promotions, such as free shipping, and will promote large in-store
discounts as a way to drive customers to stores," Johnson said.
